I was wondering if any of you know how long it takes Baytril to kick in. My baby boy (4 1/2) has been quiet for a couple of days but still eating. Yesterday morning he had his breakfast with the others but in the evening was turning away from his food, really cold (he lives in doors) and all he want ed to do was sleep. I got a vets appointment and his gland in his neck is up & he has an infection) he is on baytril & pain killers. How long does it take before I should expect any improvement? (I have given him todays medicine). He also will not eat so an syringe feeding. How much should I give him? (I don't have critical care but am mashing up his food PAH nuggets with water to make a paste).

Thanks for any advice

Did the vet give him a shot of antibiotic first? Or just give you Baytril to give him yourself?

It's important to keep his fluids up, syringe some water down him if you can. Have you got Pro-biotic? This is good when their on antibiotics (which kill all the friendly bacteria as well as the bad).

If he won't eat voluntarily, try tempting him with grass - quite often they'll eat that when they won't eat anything else. It's important to keep his guts moving.

I don't know but I think like with humans it can take a day or so for antibiotics to kick in, and it can make them feel a bit under the weather too.

Good luck, hope he perks up

The vet gave him an injection of baytril & an injection of painkiller as well. I now have some to give him orally.

Where can I get some pro-biotic? He ate a small mouthful of grass this morning but has refused it this evening.

I am so worried.

It's so worrying when they're poorly :(

Your vet should have been able to give you sachets of Bio Lapis, or you can buy Avipro plus from sphsupplies... you can buy Bio Lapis online here http://www.furrypharm.com/shop/item.asp?itemid=1069

but will be quicker to get it from your vet if they stock it or something similar.

Is he eating anything at all? If not then you'll need to keep on with the mushed up pellets, it's not easy to get it down them.

In my experience the shot of antibiotics usually gives them a kick-start - has he shown any improvement since the vet trip? If not I would think another visit will be needed. They can inject him with B12 (I think) to stimulate his appetite, as a short term fix to get him eating. They might also be able to supply you with Critical Care, which is great because it is balanced, or similar.

Good luck, I've got my fingers crossed for you, sorry I can't be more help

Agree with Sophie - keep trying the grass, it does work when all else fails! I've heard that you can also syringe baby food like apple puree if you have any.. And syringe some water too, also the probiotic is important as antibiotics can upset their tums and put them off their food.
How is he doing? Hope he is OK and starts to perk up..

I was so worried last night I took him to someone who specialises in guinea pigs 2 hours away. He had kidney failure, and was full of water. They gave him diuretics, painkillers etc (his breathing was bad), but this morning there was no improvement (no wees either) and he was put to sleep.

I am so upset (as is the OH who was never into piggies until we got together) but I know that he knew how loved he was.

Thanks for all the advice.
