My guinea pig Murphy is vet poorly he has almost stopped eating and the very says its sure to be a molar .he wants to put him down:-( I am currently syringe feeding him, he hungrily eats everything he can but he can't chew anything but parsly please help

Hello...
So sorry that your in this situation...!
Can I ask where you are based so we can point you in the direction of a good vet... Being as it sounds like yours might be a bit rubbish...

How is the piggy in himself...? Is he still moving...?
Is he trying to eat food...?
Is he pooing...?

And how much food have you got in him so far...?
You sound like your doing a great job so far... But unfortunately with piggies if they stop eating they get poorly very quick...

It isn't kind to leave him as he might be in pain. You could try a different vet for a second opinion.

have you tried offering any grated carrot or apple? I had to do this for my bubbles who broke his front tooth a few weeks ago, he managed to "hoover" the food up from a saucer...good luck, its worrying I know x

Where are you and perhaps someone can recommend a good vet.

It is possible to treat dental problems in guinea pigs and a good vet should be able to trim or file molars under general anesthetic if needed.

In the mean time try to feed your piggy easy foods like grated veg, critical care or even veg baby food like pureed carrot etc. Weigh him regularly as well so you can check his progress.

If he's in pain this needs dealt with asap. This is an issue which can be sorted without resorting to putting an animal to sleep.

Hopefully Debbie (furryfriends) will be along soon to give more advice as she runs a sanctuary for dental piggies. x

Grated stuff may be okay for piggies with broken FRONT teeth, they can still chew with their back ones but this piggie has problems with the back ones so will probably need syringe feeding with Critical Care mix if they can't chew. Debbie ( furry friends) at The excellent Adventure Sanctuary has LOADS of experience with dental piggies if you need advice. https://www.facebook.com/pages/The-...-guinea-pigs-with-extra-needs/231938713527009

Hi, as has already been mentioned, I run a Sanctuary for guinea pigs with dental issues. I have lots of experience in syringe feeding, getting them to eat again and managing dental problems in general.

Firstly, where about do you live? I think you need to find a vet who is more knowledgeable about dental issues.

Also how much syringe food are you getting in to your piggie? It sounds like he's very keen to take syringe food which is really good.

Hi Hayley Jane welcome to you and your piggy to the forum :)
Really sorry to hear about the little one....... i hope you can get your piggy to a vet who is cavy savvy, just cause it's a problem with teeth they DO NOT need to be put down. I had a little boy who had problems with his teeth for over 2 years, he was a determined little guy who wanted to eat so i continued getting his teeth trimmed so he could.
Please if you're in the UK take the advice from our members, Debbie (furryfriends) has a brilliant vet and she's just fantastic with piggies.
GOOD LUCK LOVE TO YOU BOTH XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Hello, if you could get back to furry friends that would be your best bet. I hope Murphy get better real soon. Do go to another vet and get their opinion if your vet wants to put him down. Good luck and welcome to the forum!
