Hi. I am totally new to all this, the forum and guineas in general.

I bought 2 male guineas, just turned 1, last month from a girl that was moving to uni and had to get rid of them, she had quite a few, all in separate cages apart from 2 pairs, one of which we got with a large pet shop cage. We have renamed them Peppa and George. Now George is a very shy little thing which seemed to be the case when she had them. He will run away when you try and pick him up but once you have him he loves being stroked and cuddled. Peppa is a funny one as he will whistle and beg for food and come over to the edge of the cage to see you and he is very inquisitive when you are doing something by the cage.

They have always been in a cage together a far as I can gather but they don't seem to get on very well, always doing their angry little clicking sounds and squaring up to each other. Now the cage they came in wasn't very big and they had no space for themselves so I thought that could of been the problem but me and my hubby have just built them a 2 storey c&c cage and they now have their own little houses as well and they still don't seem to get on. Is this normal? They only moved in to their house last night so do you think they will get on more when they get used to it or will they always have their tiffs?

Another thing is I am worried about is their behaviour in their new cage. As I said George is quite shy anyway but they have both seemed to go into themselves since they've moved in. They are both hiding in their houses and haven't tried to go up the ramp to the next level which is a problem as their food and water is up there. I managed to get them out by pulling their houses out and putting them in the top level so they can have food and water and hoped they would figure out the ramp and go down but they both stayed up there. I moved them back down myself and they have took to their houses again. Is this just normal as they have a new environment or do they just hate their new cage? I'm worried as we have spent alot of time and quite a bit of money on their new cage and the other cage is so small I'd hate it if they just didn't like it. 8...

A new home and/or territory always demands a new dominance sort out, which is what you are currently seeing. Hopefully, it will calm down again to an extent; some boars enjoy winding each other up, but are very careful not cross the line. Just give them time to get their bearings and reaffirm their standings; it can take some days. It doesn't sound like they are likely to get into bloody fights, though - they are nearly out of the hormonal phase.

Here is our boar guide with further links; you may find it helpful:

PS: your boys are beautiful!

When I built the 2nd story for my cage the girls were wary of the ramp at first. Then I made the ramp more of a tunnel by putting some fleece over it with a couple supports. They immediately went right up it.

The ramp also has to have good traction and not be too steep. Mine takes a little over 2 grid lengths to go up one level so it is a little less than a 45 degree angle.

Hi,

I think it's pretty common for guinea pigs to be wary of a new environment. They are "prey" animals, so they have to feel safe. My 4 live in a c+c during the winter and i have just put them out into a new hutch. They are all used to the ramp in the c+c, but have been very wary of the new one in the hutch!

Hopefully your boys will work it out and soon be charging up and down it. What is your ramp like? What have you lined it with? Mine is made of plywood with sides and i line it with pieces of carpet tile (nice and cheap and easy for them to grip onto rolleyes).
You could try putting water and food both upstairs and downstairs. Having 2 of everything will ensure George always gets food, if Peppa is bullying him a bit.
You boys are just lovely x). My boar is also called george and he is a little sweetheart x).

Rrrr thank you ladies, I love my boys, just wish they'd be more friendly together.

My cage has 2 levels but they have to be enclosed as I have a little 2 year old boy (surrounded by men rolleyes ) and I'm finding it hard to get them out now. George has to be caught as he will not come out to you (hoping this will change) and now Peppa is being very coy :( . I manage to pull them out once today in their houses and put them on the top level and then I put them back downstairs and when I tried to get them again in the same way I got Peppa out but George has cottoned on and gets out from underneath the house (I think he's the brains of the outfit and Peppa is the brawn, lol) I did manage to scoop him up in the house and get him out and have some cuddles and put them back up as I want them getting thirsty and hungry. When my hubby came in he tried to get Peppa out for a cuddle but he ran down the ramp so at least one of them sort of gets the jist of it.

I just hope my boys get happy as I love them to pieces but just wish they would seem a bit more friendly towards us. I hope they're not scared of us :(
Maybe its the fact that they're house is bright pink as they were the only grids I could find at a reasonable price (£2.40 for 12 grids) :(|)

I have the bright pink ones too!

Hopefully they will settle once they're used to their new home.

My piggies still run away from me when i try to catch them. I think it's just a natural instict to run when a big hand tries to get hold of you!

I "herd" my piggies into the upper level and block the ramp off quickly with one of their hideys. I have an opening "lid" both ends of the c+c cage, so i can easily get hold of them. They're fine once i pick them up ;)

Helen, I just wish they'd go up on their own so I could block them off, lol. The house has a door on the lower level and a grid missing on the top and then a hatch on top as well. I've got spare grids that I'm going to set up to the side of the cage and open the door so they'll have a run. Got them a hanging tunnel for their cage and a pop up tunnel for their run. Going to pine woods at the weekend to get some pine cones to bake for them and I'm going to stuff some toilet roll tubes with hay and treats and make some little dens with towels and stuff. :laluot_24:

Sounds lovely, lucky piggies!
Mine love the little tents i make them with left over bits of fleece.
Just a thought, maybe a nice tasty "trail" going up the ramp to tempt them :)
