hi all

It's been a while since I've been online so sorry for that!

Sadly, we lost our beloved Pancake last night. She was 9 years old! We think she had a stroke around 5pm and by 6 we were with the emergency vet. She had fluid around her abdomen and a very slow heart rate. We knew the kindest thing to do was to PTS and my little girl went very peacefully.

The reason for my post is... Dexter, 5 year old boar and Pancakes cage mate is now alone and I don't know what to do. I'm not in a position to get another pig but I don't want him to be lonely. The thought of rehoming him makes me sad but the thought of him feeling lonely is worse. Any advice?

First of all I'm really sorry for your sad loss Jen x

Adopting a girl piggy as a friend for Dexter would be the best thing to do. But if you don't want to get into the endless loop of doing this could you speak to a rescue & ask if they would take her back when Dexter has gone. It probably wouldn't be necessary as you would fall in love with her too. So when she was left by herself you would be considering the same again. As a rescue owner myself I would definitely do this. In countries like Switzerland it is the law that guinea pigs can't be kept solo so rescues loan piggies out x

I am so sorry for the loss of Pancake, PTS is such an agonising decision to have to make but you did the best for her when she needed you the most.

How is Dexter? Is he eating okay?

So sorry for your loss. Hope Dexter is okay. I went through a similar thing in the summer with my boys. Heisenberg seemed upset for a few weeks but got used to the fact that little Darwin wasn't coming back. I got another piggy for him to bond with but I don't think the other piggy likes Heisenberg too much but will continue to try. But for now Heisenberg seems pretty happy by himself. I know it isn't recommended for piggies to live alone but he honestly is pretty happy. Maybe if a friend of yours has a piggy then you could ask to have piggy play dates so he does have some company every now and again

he is still eating just fine (he is such a porker!) but isn't as vocal as usual and seems quite sad but maybe that's me imagining it!
I'm starting to think getting a little friend for him would be the best option, but an older piggy that needs a forever home xx
