My GP Charley is going for an operation on Tuesday to have a large lump removed from his side.

Please can anyone offer me any advice on the after care he will need and if there is anything I will need to do differently!

What do you all put in your GP's cage, i've been putting wood shavings!

Are there any medicines i can buy to help him recover quicker?

Also is there anyone on here that has had an older boar go through an operation, Charley is 4 and a half and i'm worried sick that he won't survive the anesthetic or that he'll get an infection in the wound. Want to do all I can for him!

Any advice welcome,

Thanks
Nicky & Charley Boy

I think a vetbed is a good purchase. It'll keep him cosy and warm and also absorbs urine if he's not very mobile after surgery. You can also wash them in the machine. I personally wouldn't use wood shavings as they absorb the natural oils from piggie's feet and can cause breathing problems from the dust (something I've learned over time). You can use hay and newspaper. It's up to you whether you put the hay in a rack or cover the newspaper with it (which is what I used to do). If you go to the Housing section on this forum there are plenty of other suggestions for bedding, etc. I'd probably buy some critical care which is liquid feed in case he doesn't eat for a while as piggie's digestive systems shut down after a while if they stop eating. It is made up with water and can be syringed. The vet may give you some pain relief and medication to bring home. I'm not completely sure as I've never had to deal with this before. I've had a sow go through an operation for bladder stones at 6 and she recovered fine. My fingers are crossed that the op goes well for Charley :)

Is Charley the pig with a bleeding lump on his back? I remember a thread a few days ago about him.

Ditto to the above, Vetbed is the best bedding. If you can't get Vetbed in time, towels are a fine alternative but need changing much more frequently, usually daily.

Bertie and Rene both had Cebaceous cysts removed from their backs. Both went under Gen anesthetics and both were acting as normal afterwards. Those were cysts that sat on top of the body, not inside, so I don't know about invasive surgey...
They were housed on woodchips at the time and it all went well.

Sending him lots of healing vibes for his operation.

I would house him on vetbed or towels (changed daily) while he is recovering. Although the wound is on his back, it is best not to have him on woodshavings as wood dust might get in the wound.

Keep him warm and make sure that he is eating and drinking asap after his operation. Tempt him with lettuce and cucumber as they are tasty and as a treat. Cucumber contains lots of water to help him not to dehydrate.

Keep us posted and I am sure will be go well for him.

Critical care

Where can I get this from?
Is it for humans?
Ive been to buy the vet bed. its big enough to cover the entire cage, is this ok to do or do i only use it for some of the cage.

Sorry to ask so many questions but am so nervous about the op tomorrow!

Thanks
