help! piggie slowly dying after malocclusion surgery

Very few vets will do conscious filing of teeth. We are so lucky in that our vet does and is also so knowledgeable about guinea pig teeth. However, it isn't about whether they do them with or without GA, but whether they get them right and sadly most vets don't seem to. It sounds like he wants to eat but just can't! I really hope you can find a vet who can help him xx
Thank you for your help.
I think this time I may have found a specialist. There are 2 that are recommended around Grenoble, I’m seeing one of the 2. This first I called recommended the other as she couldn’t see us before 14th. Buddy is skin and bones, I’m uncertain he’ll make it to Wednesday let alone another 10 days.
Here’s hoping whatever is still wrong is fixable.
I trusted the vet who did the job. They said they’re experienced at GP work and all. But now I realize sadly they just don’t have the expertise. His vet says his teeth are now fine, that Buddy just needs to eat, like he’s choosing to do this. and when I say his chin’s drenched she claims that’s fine too. And they laugh when we talk about what we read on the internet. Good job we can use the internet to check what they are saying. Man, it’s so annoying.

You’re totally right about him wanting to eat btw. Whenever he hears the food noises he’s used to hearing he runs over to see and sniffs. then he’ll try uselessly or turn away like he’s remembered it’s knackered.
very upsetting situation 😕

It makes me so sad that owners and their guinea pigs are being let down so badly. I wish vets would say if they aren't experienced in guinea pig dental work. There is no shame in admitting that, but plenty of shame in not saying and doing a poor job. Most of our residents, here at TEAS, have been signed over to us by very loving owners, who can't get them the treatment they need more locally and are too far away to travel regularly to Simon. It's heartbreaking!

It's good that he still wants to eat, as if you can find someone who can sort his teeth, then hopefully he will start to make good progress! So sad seeing them want to eat though and not being able to!

This is our Tilly! She’s been through so much but making amazing progress now. She had a retrobulbar abscess and had her eye removed and then two days later a tooth root abscess burst out too. After two big ops in four days she’s been on the up and up!

What a beautiful little lady! Buddy and Tilly look really quite alike, don’t you think?
And what alot the little sweetie has been through, and you too! Lovely that she’s getting better after so many ordeals. We know they are fragile little critters but they also have a really strong spirit and know how to fight!
So long as we find the right help 😐
She’s a gorgeous little guinea pig!

Gosh I had to do a double take there! They look so alike, apart from the colour of their noses x
Wishing Tilly and Buddy all the luck x Hope this new vet can sort Buddy’s teeth x

They are ringers aren’t they! When I fish saw the photo of Tilly I thought I’d accidentally posted a second one of Buddy! But on closer inspection Tilly looks like a pretty little miss piggy, complete with prettily side parting styled mane!
Yes, fingers crossed for the new vet, and continued recovery to Tilly. xx

Tilly’s hair naturally falls across where her eye is missing, so no one notices she has a missing eye!

Fingers crossed for Buddy, you just have to keep doing what you are doing to get him beefed up as much as possible. Add a sprinkling of porridge oats to his cc. Keep giving little and often. Leave some cc and porridge oats both in his cage so he has constant access. Feed gratings of veg.

Be aware that weight fluctuates throughout the day and a big wee can account for 20-40g I think. Don't be disheartened if it drops slightly over a few hours. Just keep doing what you are doing, you are giving him the best possible chance here and if he's going to make it it will be from your hard work as much as the new vet

Well, she’s a little beauty.
When she came to TEAS she hadn’t been able to eat anything other than softened food for 18 months, despite her owner trying desperately to get her the treatment she needed. She now eats normally but will need two weekly dentals for the rest of her life! x

porridge oats is a good idea, and I’m sticking to the little frequenly advice, and Buddy’s now 688g. I want to help his weight, last couple of days he’s really gone skeletal on me under his
magnificent coat. He’s literally shrunk.
Thank you for your lovely encouragement. x

18 months, what a long time. Thankfully they found help in the end, with ongoing care too. xx

Try giving him some dry food soaked in water and watch him if he sniffs or eats it, if not then he is probably in pain as guinea pigs do not eat while they are in pain.

He sniffs but seems to know he can’t eat it. I wafted his one time beloved chicory leaf under his nose and he sniffed and tried to munch but zero effect so he moved away. I offer him soaked pellets too, he had some last week but now he just sniffs and looks away. He is however taking his pellet mash and cc happily, no actual force feeding going on. He comes to the syringe and keeps on pulling on we empty it. I’m pro now, I have a batch lined up ready for action! He looks at his most alert when he clocks the syringes. His appetite seems ok.

....and I really don’t know about pain. Is it the pain stopping him manage to bite food? The only time he’s eated almost like before this last fortnight though was the hour after he had that pain killing injection at the vets. Can’t be a coincidence. I sat there allowing myself think we had a breakthrough when it was a sort of one off. head wrecker. x

How is he now? Is he eating at all?
Hello, sorry for today’s silence.
He was 608g again this am, back up to 670g now. He was more listless today but unexpectedly perked up this evening. He’s willingly having his cc feeds and tells me when he’s had enough by walking off and sitting on my hoodie, his newest cushion. Hour and a half later we start all over again. I’m lucky I have free time right now to dedicate to his care.
He’s still drooling alot and showing initial interest in food followed by the “ah yes, forgot...” so he isn’t trying to pick up food. As we’re going wednesday and the drooling and all I’ve backed off too, I just want him to get to the appointment with a little weight on him then we’ll see.
The 2 boys in the cage with him are - as nature dictates - now his superiors. Their displays of domination are too much sometimes, and I take him out a while. he’s snuggled in his kitty travel cage close to me. I’d give him the run of the flat but I’ve never entirely trusted his doggy big brother around him-wrong time to tempt fate!
Thank you for your concern. I’ll update tomorrow. Off now..feeding time! x

Well he just had his happy half hour! He perked up before the 11:30ish feed after well, looking expired all day. then during the feed does no more than go for walks round the bathroom then coming over to the syringe for a slurp then off again! far gone are the force feeds! then after a bowl full of pellet/cc he’s off to the lounge for a fairly speedy wander ending up lazing on the just so hot water bottle. If I wasn’t for his drooly chin I’d wonder if I wasn’t being taken for a mug by another male lol
in any case it’s sooo nice to see him so much brighter. he’s feeling the forum good wishes just like I am! and we hit 700g before bedtime! yaay!
xx
