Hi guys just looking for some advice on which pellets are best to buy I have four females age 16-20 weeks currently on pets at home pellets I have seen grain free are better? Can anyone recommend a brand please I have seen the nugget comparison chart but just wondering what is it I’m looking out for % wise to have and avoid… many thanks

So 0.78 on calcium for pets at home I’m seeing this as the second highest calcium % on the chart… is it safe to cut the pellets down in calcium % when they are only having one tablespoon a day… I’m just looking for a healthy brand and good calcium/phosphate level I’m a bit confused. now let’s just say I’m not the sharpest tool in the shed 🤓

I feed science selective grain free (as do many on the forum) they are Timothy hay based which is lower is calcium vs the PAH ones which are alfalfa based. Grains are just fillers in nuggets and not a necessary part of a guineapigs diet hence why people opt for grain free!
When switching over mix some new ones in with old so they can get used to the new ones with no upset tummies. They only need a tablespoon per pig per day, they are a very easy thing to over feed!

Thank you guys appreciate your help I’m having a look on haybox I’m not sure I can afford them at the moment but are these the right SS ones please?

Many thanks could you advice me on how much to mix with my old pellets and for how long please :) so science select grain free is a good healthy choice? Many thanks! X

you just gradually do it,
so 3/4 of a tablespoon of old pellets and 1/4 of new pellets for a few days, then
1/2 tablespoon of old pellets and 1/2 tablespoon of new pellets for a few days, then
1/4 tablespoon of old pellets and 3/4 tablespoon of new pellets for a few days
etc

Having just checked out the ingredients in the P@H pellets, yes, the science selective are better. I would not feed p@h pellets because they are alfalfa based and alfalfa is best avoided. you want a pellet which is Timothy Hay based

I’ve just adopted my pair of ladies and I’m using Burges. I opted for that as I kept rabbits for 9 years and that’s what they ate. Of course rabbits are like piggies in respect of the vast amount of hay they should eat compared to amount of pellets. Still - the rabbits thrived on whatever can be attributed to the amount of Burges they ate!

This might be controversial but we actually reduced our total pellet intake when my last pig arrived by adding her P@H nuggets to our usual Burgess (purple pack) nuggets which until that point had been very popular and I was aiming to transition fully to these. Unexpectedly preferences went the other way so now I allocate a sprinkle of P@H nuggets on top of some Burgess and the P@H are definitely cleared first. Then the Burgess get picked at a bit. P@H nuggets are pretty big so they actually eat them in a different way - the Burgess they stay at the bowl to eat but the larger P@H they fish out individually and back up to eat off the floor which has worked out nicely in terms of social time and taking turns at the bowl.

I can't remember which ones are a sort of donut shape but there have been one or two posts in the past about these getting stuck like a hoopla over the bottom incisors and causing problems. No doubt this is pretty rare but I've avoided them on that basis...

Mine get a mix of harringtons and SS grain free. Funnily enough there was no protest at all when I introduced the SS. In fact my black beauty seems to prefer them.

All my piggies started on burgess before I moved them over to harringtons. I had started a pellet free Sunday but ended up starting it again. Plan is to do it again very soon. And maybe move to two pellet free days.
