Help Please Ringworm

Just been to vets and Pepper has ringworm. They wanted over £100 for the wash and medicine to treat her which I refused as I wanted to see if it was cheaper online. They said imvaverol and something to take orally. Do I need both and can I get it any where cheaper? Thanks

Itrafungol is unfortunately a prescription-only medication (POM) and not cheap at all. it has the advantage that it is somewhat less stressful on especially new piggies than lots of dips. Please also treat any companion piggies, as they can carry spores in their coats even if they don't come down with ringworm themselves; dipping them will prevent them from developing acute ringworm and they can stay together, which will make thing easier for you.

You can try it with just the dips every 3 days for a minimum of 3-4 rounds; I have done it in the days before Itrafungol came on the scene and it has worked well in otherwise healthy guinea pigs.

Please make sure to get F10 disinfectant, as it is the only one to also kill ringworm spores. That is an expense that is well making! You can order it from a number of online providers when you google.

I've ordered the f10 already so hopefully that'll be here in the next couple of days. I'll try the wash as well as it looks like it's very early stages.

The dilution for imaverol/enilconazole is 1:50 parts of water (as stated on the package). Please don't rinse and make sure that the dip is going right down to the skin. If you use just the dip, do so every three days, if you are additionally treating with itrafungol, once weekly.
 
How do you do their eyes/top of head? Is it like sheep dip where you totally submerge them?

No, I use a syringe to carefully get the dip in between the hair around the eyes, ears and mouth. A cotton bud will also do. If you are doing this with a new piggy, please do it in a plastic bowl in your bath tub or on a wipeable floor, so if your piggy panics and blind jumps, it can't hurt itself badly.

I've just read that you can use Nizrol shampoo to treat them. Is this worth doing while I'm waiting for the dip to arrive?

Yes, you can if you wish to. Please be aware that nizoral is quite a bit harsher and you need to very be careful around the sensitive areas. I have found imaverol gentler and more effective than nizoral.
 
I think I'll just wait then, I paid for rapid delivery so hopefully it'll be here before the weekend.
 
Good luck. We've dealt with ringworm twice with our group of 4 sows. I have found the combination of itrafungol meds and elinconazole dip very effective each time.
 
If you do opt for Itrafungol aswell you can get a prescription from your vets to buy online. A whole bottle at my vets was about £70 but I got it online for about £36 plus the vets prescription fee which was £4 though it was a couple of years ago.
 
Her eye looks a lot worse this morning, yesterday there was just a bit of hair loss this morning it's half closed! She seems happy, pop Corning about and eating her food.image.webp
 
All 3 piggies have been washed in nizerol and had canasten thinly applied to any patches.

One of peppers house mates has no sign any where. Giggles though has a crusty lip and nose, when she was wet and I looked at her belly there is a bald patch which looks fairly healed up and another patch where the hair is growing back through.image.webp
Can ringworm heal itself?

I've contacted pet shop who say they've had no complaints and that non of there's have had it. They've offered to swap my piggies for healthy ones which I'm not prepared to do. I want these ones plus I would imagine they would 'dispose' of them!
 
The nizoral is much harsher, especially around sensitive areas. Unfortunately, ringworm has to run its due course, which means that the hairs in the whole affected area around the initial spot has to come out - you are inevitably ending up with a much bigger bald spot before the end of the acute phase.
That is the reason why we have included the pictures of the development of a typical ringworm infection in our guide.
 
I only used a little bit and rinsed it straight off just want them to be more comfortable. Poor things

Sadly, it takes at least a week to get through the acute phase and it has to get worse before it can get better. However, with our tips, that is going to be it and then you will be free of it again. Please be very careful in case you notice any signs of infection on yourself at some point.
 
Does cheilitus and ring worm look the same? They have scabby noses and mouths. Vet said ring worm but it looks like photos of cheilitus.

Peppers hair has came out of the patch on her back and it looks awfulimage.webp
But her eye is looking a lot better. The batch on her back is dry and scabby.

Cheilitis can be fungal or bacteria based. The acidity in fruit and tomatoes causes tiny cracks that allow bacteria and spores to enter.

Are you getting itrafungol? I found that it has cleared up a minor case with my Morwenna really efficiently, so we didn't need to try an antibiotic next. Fungal is more in common in cheilitis than a bacterial infection.

I am very sorry; you are currently in the worst phase before the second and third round are starting to clear up the worst of it. Once the exudate from the fungal comes off, there is often a sore, bloody patch underneath, but with regular dips it tends to heal off pretty quickly.

Does the enilconazole dip treat the cheilitus as well?

It should, if you very carefully dab it on the lips. See whether it gets better that way. Otherwise, you may need a fungal cream, but you have to ask your vet which would be best in view of their young age.

Ouch! Please see a pharmacist for a strong fungicidal cream. If things go really bad, you may have to see a gp for an antibiotic.

Piggy update, they've had one bath in the dip and I've stopped using canesten for now. No new areas have appeared and two of them have no scabs with just a few bald patches. Pepper who was the worst still has a scabby back but her eye is now blab but dry. It still is swollen though and has a small scab on it that's starting to come off.

I have about 5 1p sized patches on my torso that aren't getting any bigger. I'm using canesten till I see the doc tomorrow. No sign if it on the kids yet!

Please see your vet as well as the eye is still swollen; that is very worrying! :(

Otherwise the ringworm seems to be running its due course and you should hopefully be soon past the acute phase.
 
Eyes back to normal today! Time for their 2nd bath and the weathers awful so I think they can spend the day inside.
