Hope Patchy can make a full recovery. Keeping her in our thoughts x

Patchy is in very best of hands! I hope that Debbie and Simon can work their usual magic together and make her well soon!

Thanks all. She is a beautiful girl with a great temperament and means a lot to us. Tbag thanks for the recommendation of that place in Ewell, that is very close! We actually decided to take Patchy on a mercy dash to see Debbie at the Sanctuary on Sunday after a long conversation with her on Saturday morning! As she said above, she took Patchy to see Simon and he found that her back teeth were massively overgrown and still had sharp burrs. So we had paid £115 for our vet to put her under and not file her teeth properly. They also cut her front teeth too short. Simon has spent ages this evening filing her teeth with her conscious. She was apparently extremely well behaved!
We don't like to criticize our vet, but why can they not be honest and admit they are not experts, rather than letting us spend a lot of our hard-earned money? Patchy may have to go under again with Simon to get them done properly. But he wants her to put 200 grams on first. Debbie is going to keep Patchy for an extended holiday. It was amazing to see how good she was with a syringe, and got more food down her in 10 minutes than we had in the last few days! We always feel worried about choking her but it seems you can be quite confident and get a lot down in one go! Thank you Debbie and thanks all for your help. Watch this space...

oh blimey, just caught up with all this, ouch re your vet and the £115 but really hope your Patchy gains really quick (girls do, i can confirm that...eek) and you get her home soon xx

atchy has just taken 20 mls of syringe food and it looks like she may have eaten some grass overnight. Her weight is starting to creep up, with a 37g weight gain already. Early days but definitely a step in the right direction. Simon is going to see Patchy again on Friday, as he is going on holiday for one week from Saturday.

Yay! So pleased to hear she's hopefully on the mend!

Patchy is currently having a lot of syringe food, as we need to get her weight up. At the same time I am encouraging her to try to eat little bits for herself. I am aiming to get about 20 mls into her per serving, with the intention of getting about 120 mls into her over a 24 hour period. It seems a lot, but piggies do eat a tremendous amount, and have such a fast metabolism.

Debbie - you really are a piggy fairy godmother xx

God I feel awful, everybody is being so lovely and thoughtful about our piggy, and I haven't even had the decency to comment! Been manic busy the last few days, but that's no excuse. If Debbie can find time to post whilst singlehandedly looking after the menagerie, so can I.!
Anyway, so delighted to hear this. Keep up the excellent work Debbie, you are a Saint x

Despite the tremendous efforts of Debbie and Simon the vet, it is with a heavy heart that I have to report that our beautiful girl was put to sleep this morning. We only just got back from holiday and didn't get the chance to say goodbye. Poor Debbie had to make the decision with the vet. Thanks to all your comments and thank you Debbie, you're a saint to continue with your devotion. People who have not kept guinea pigs will not understand the loss. All three of our girls now gone within 6 months. Very sad indeed, we feel bereaved.

I'm so sorry you lost her. It 's so hard after trying everything you could to help her. Popcorn free Patches xx

I have just come across this thread and read my way through it with anticipation then with growing excitement that Patches was on the way to recovery. I am now wiping away the tears as I write this knowing that Cozza will be devastated (Debbie too, having put so much time and emotion into nursing Patches).
I am so sorry for your losses Cozza and your final loss must be so heartbreaking. Run free Patches with your friends over the bridge.

I'm really sorry to hear this sad news. It's devastating when one of your little ones dies. It seems that everything that could be done for Patchy was. Sometimes no matter what you do, it is all to no avail. My thoughts are with you at this sad time. xx

I am very sorry for your loss! I know firsthand what good care Debbie is taking and use Simon myself, so I know that you all have done what you could for Patchy. But it is hard when you can't be there; I know that myself.

You are most welcome to post a tribute to Patchy in our Rainbow Pets section if and when you feel that you can and want to handle it.

I have just caught up with this and am so sorry. You did everything you could for Patches. Massive hugs at this sad time to you.

RIP Patches
x x

Although Patchy wasn't mine, when you spend so much time providing supportive care you become very close to a piggy. I am so sad that we were unable to get Patchy better, and although it was the right decision to let her go, it still breaks my heart that we were unable to return her fit and well to her family.

Sleep well Patchy darling! x

shes not suffering anymore.I'm sure her time with you was extemely happy

Thanks guys you're all so kind. You have brought tears to my eyes and I am a grown man! I read your comments to my wife and she is crying. We have lovely memories to take away with us. I will never forget the 3 bundles small enough to sit in our hands. Watching them grow and have fun together. Seeing them popcorn in their run, mowing the fresh green grass. And wheaking away every time we chopped vegetables on the chopping board, whether it was for our dinner or theirs, they made it known they wanted some! And seeing them run free around our kitchen in a little train, all purring with delight. And the way they all would come up to the bars of the run to say hello, sniffing the air, showing their cute little mouths. I will never forget watching them lay on my wife's chest, so relaxed that their legs were splayed out and their heads laid down. They would be there for hours even while my wife slept. And we would only put them back when they finally did a wee! Or how little Bella would climb up and snuggle under my wife or daughter's hair.
The love you have for any animal is not measured by their size, breed or intelligence. It's what you get back from them. And when they seem to enjoy your company and give you love not just for the reward of food, then this makes a strong bond. Rest in peace beautiful girls x
