hi all,
My names is Natalie, I am new to here, I am in England.
My daughter has a 6mth old male guinea pig called Bobby and i took him to the vets with a tilted head and a flickering eye the other day and they though maybe neurological or ear infection so treated him with anti-biotics & anti-inflamotory and since then he has still got a slight head tilt but he has lost weight but is still eating fresh food, not as many pellets and has never drank much.
I am really worried about him, my hubby has noticed that by his bum/private parts he looks swallon is this his testicles? Weve never noticed this before.
Thanks in advance xx

Hiya,

Sorry to hear Bobby is unwell. We will move this thread into the health and illness section where experienced members may be able to advise you of the next steps to take in Bobbys care.

Sending you and Bobby healing hugs.

Lisa & Ali...x

hello,

How much anti biotics did they give you?

Could you take a photo of his bum, so we can have a look see if we can advise? Could you add your location to your profile also?

Thanks
Lee

They gave him anti biotics as a needle in the vets then we have been giving him 0.6ml morning and night since mon and we rang and got more today :-(

They do look a bit reddish, Is Bobby pooping ok ?

He is still eating fresh food too although he has gone off his favourite which is cucumber which i am not too pleased about as it is full of water and he has poor apetite for water x

Would your vet consider a different antibiotic such as Zithromax? Baytril is not often strong enough to tackle an ear infection but is the antibiotic that a lot of vets choose first. Is he having the anti-inflammatory at home aswell or was it just an injection?

No it was just at the vets.
He seems more lethargic today, it is heartbreaking.
I can't afford to go to the vets again it has cost us £66 this week we didn't have already, it is awful x

Would the vet let you pay in instalments? An ear infection can be very painful so the vet should have given you pain relief /anti-inflammatory to give at home. If you explain over the phone they may even let you just call in and pick it up so you don't need to pay for the appointment.

Oh I am so sorry to hear that Bobby is not well. He is obviously needing medical care from a vet to have the best chance of getting better.

I would definitely ask your vet about a payment plan as most vets will do this even if they do not advertise it as such.

Have you checked to see if you might be able to get free care through the PDSA if you are getting certain benefits.

Have you just got Bobby or have you had him for some time?

Please let us know how he gets on as we will be thinking of him.

Sending Bobby 'healing vibes' and 'hugs' to you xx

Thankyou, i looked into pdsa but we don't qualify.

Our vets have told us to contact another vets that deal with tropical animals which is what guineas are apparently. I am going to call them to see what they can offer today. X

Poor Bobby. It is definitely worth seeing a vet with more piggy experience. It can make all the difference to the outcome. I agree with @helen105281 about Zithromax and a painkiller. It sounds like the infection has not completely gone. Please let us know how you get on.

Good luck. I will have my fingers crossed for you.

Have you had a look at the Vet Locator on the main toolbar to see if any listed are near to you? I believe the ones listed come recommended from members who have had dealings with them for their piggies.
