Hi all, my 6 month boar is ill. He's very quiet today and his fur is a little up. He got into a fight yesterday and I separated him from his mate who's bitten or scratched his nose as there's some dried blood there. I think his breathing is a little laboured. What should I give him?
Will take him to vets first thing if he's no better but what can I do in meantime? Help appreciated!

Sorry to hear about your pig. Is his breathing laboured because his nose is bunged up with dried blood? Or is it coming from his chest? Hold him up to you ear and have a listen.

Is he eating / drinking / pooping?

He might be slightly in shock. Have you checked him over for any other bite wounds?

I would keep him quiet. If he's eating and drinking then that's a really good sign. If he's not then you need to try and encourage him to do so - pick some grass, they normally can't resist that!

Thanks for replying! He had his veggie breakfast this morning so yes definitely eating. Could be shock couldn't it. I can't hear any wheezing and there aren't any other wounds.

I'll put him in a nice warm basket away from the others and keep an eye on him. I always get so worried when they're not well..:(

sorry to hear your little pig isn't well :( but if hes eating and his breathing isn't wheezy you shouldn't worry too much :) just keep an eye on him :)

Yeah I would think it's shock. Keep him nice and quiet and give him plenty of hay to hide in so he feels safe. Just check on him every hour or so just to be on the safe side.

Hope he is ok tonight.
It is always a good sign if a piggie is eating well - just keep an eye on him.

If he is still a bit shaky tomorrow, you could get some Bachs rescue remedy and a few drops will calm him down. It is available in any chemist..Boots, Superdrug etc definately sell it.

So sorry to hear about the boys fighting :(
You did the right thing and i'm sure with some TLC he'll be ok again quickly xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Hi again guys, well he's no worse except I think I can hear some slight wheezing now an he has a slightly crusty eye. Am taking him to vet to be on safe side. He's eaten a tiny bit of veg but his appetite is not what is usually is. I'll get some of the bach remedy though as I often hear about that on this website. Could he just have cold? I hope it's just that.

Keeping him warm anyhow and will update you later :-)

Actually I've just been checking Peter Guerney's site and I think he has symptoms of a URI. Oh god :-( Well calling the vet when they open...

Don't worry too much - a course of antibiotics and he should be right as rain :)
