I've got my 3.5 year old boar an appointment first thing tomorrow. He had a cauliflower willy and I've been cleaning it and it's a lot better. But on checking him earlier this evening, I think he's impacted and there are big clumps of poo in the hutch. What can I do in he meantime to help? He seems ok in himself...

Hi JayneG.

There have been a couple of threads on cauliflower willy's over the past couple of days. I have to say that none of my boars that I have owned have had one. I have had a couple of impacted boars but that is different.

Have you checked that he hasn't got anything stuck to the tip of his penis? You can do this by gently pressing on his tummy just above his penis. That should make the penis come out and you can look at the tip. If there is anything like woodshavings, hay or dried semen stuck to it you can gently bathe that area in warm water, dry it and hope that it will retract back.

If not, a visit to the vet is recommended. Check out the other threads as it seems pretty common at the moment!

Are there any poops stuck to him? I'm not sure if poop clumps in the living area means impaction. I've only heard of it talked about when on the pig itself.

Hope he is ok. :)

Big clumps of poo can be a sign of impaction because there are few pellets formed and the clumps just come out instead.

Thanks for that Goldie! :) Learn something new everyday! :)

It's impaction then I'm sure of it. I've just checked him again and now he's wet. He must be lying his his wee now. Poor thing looks quite messy. I don't want to wash him and give him a chill. Am leaving him quiet until vets tomorrow.

How will the vet treat him dyou think?

With impaction, the clumps can lodge in the anal sac particularly if the boar is in-active because of old age or ill health. Then they have to be removed manually by a loving owner! :(:))

If, however, the boar does move around, then the poos can come out in a clump during movement. Not always, but sometimes.

Not a nice condition for either the boar or the owner ... or my mum and dad who had to deal with my first impacted boar many years ago when I went away on holiday. They described that dad would hold the boar while mum would get a cotton bud out on him (the piggie, not my dad lol) ... not a nice job, very smelly! Don't think my mum has got over it yet! :)):)):))

Thank you all.

He's not the most active piggie. He's fairly shy but very greedy. I saved him from a friends kids who just left him in a cold hutch with no hay and hardly any food. He thought he'd found heaven when he came to me and couldn't eat enough most days!

I think I'll bring him in for 5 and see if I can clean him up a bit. I'll have to bring his mate Eric with him or he'll go nutty if I separate them, they're very close.

Hate to see him like this :-(

Bring his mate in also as separating them might cause them not to re-bond again rolleyes.

If he has become less active than previously and seems to be sitting around hence the wet bottom and poo bottom, then you need to make sure that he is eating and drinking as usual.

Explain this all to the vet tomorrow. He will probably check his teeth ... they always do ... then his temperature and ask you about his eating habits and general health.

Hope all goes well. Let us know.

Just a thought .... has he eaten more grass or green vegs than usual?
As this can cause watery poos.

Nothing different except he's had some melon this week which I give them every now and then. He's generally quite a greedy pig and is at his bowl far longer than Eric who usually goes off after a while...

have you got any old towels and flannels? if so, put a towel on your lap, then piggie, then put a warm damp flannel on his anus and hopefully that'll help him pass out the poop. I worked as a care assistant and I had to dfo this to many old folk with the same condition (they WEREN'T on my lap though!). Actually, you may need quite a few towels on your lap :(|):)):) good luck!
