I'm worried about our eldest Guinea Pig, Misty.

We got her last year from our local rescue centre. Her age is unknown and we deliberately didn't want to know her circumstances. All we knew was that she was very timid when we got her, and it has taken her months to finally settle and seemed happy and contented.

Recently, she's become very 'quiet'. Spending long periods alone (she lives with 3 other ladies), sleeping a lot more than usual and generally less active. She seems to be eating ok, but over last few days has become uninterested in the fresh veg.

Anyone any ideas what could be wrong with her? I guess at this stage its just a feeling I have, but I think she's getting poorly :(

sounds like she is in her twilight years or that her previous life has taken its toll.
the best thing would be to visit yiour vet and perhaps contact the rescue you got her from

I agree that a trip to the vets is in order, but I'm inclined to think that maybe she is just slowing in old age. I know I have noticed it in other rodents so I would think its quite possible.

Good luck

it might be old age, but I've had a bad day today losing a piggy cos he hadn't eaten food or drink since yesterday and passed away at the vets, so I would take him to the vets if you are still worried

Do you know how old she could be? I know it is hard to know with rescue pigs.

Are you weighing her regularly? I did this with Dizzy when started to lose condition and "was not right" (no specific symptoms) at age five.

We have always thought she was an older pig, but its just so hard to tell. She'd had a litter whilst in the rescue, but she just appeared 'exhausted' when we got her, which made us think it wasn't her first.

She had been more active over last few months, even taking to popping about the cage hehe

We are going to keep a close eye on her this evening, and phone vets first thing in the morning, even just to be on the safe side.

Thanks for all the advice :)

Good luck - let us know what the vet say.

Hope she's okay :)

Is she any brighter this morning?

I have an old girl, true age unknown but estimated to be at least 5 years. She's started having more down days. There does come a point when they start slowing down, although it varies with each pig - some of my 4.5 year olds look and act not a day over 1!

I do hope your Misty is healthy, fingers crossed she's doing ok.

She does seem much brighter today. Came in from nightshift this morning, and she was pottering about quite the thing. Ate veggies and hay and just seemed a bit better. She's not been drinking as much (she's a very noisy drinker!), however she's been eating a lot of cucumber etc so not too worried. Will pop a bowl of water in too, to see if that tempts her.

Panic over I think, although we'll be keeping a close eye on her. My partner is 9-5 and i'm nightshift just now, so somebody is in the house most of the day. I think a trip to the vets would be very traumatic for her, last time she went, poor thing was terrified!

Thanks to everyone for their concern :)

"she is a noisy drinker"

that amuses me ~ sorry but how can a guin be a noisy drinker?

I too have a noisy drinker. Some of them rather enjoy making a racket with the water bottles!
