Hello all, one of my piggies poppy was on Baytril for a few days before reacting to it. She was off her food and wasn’t quite herself. With the vets advice we took her off Baytril. We’ve seen a big improvement in her since Thursday which is when this properly started. But last night she had some loose poops. I sent the photo of them to a vet and gave her some fibreplex today. The poops are SO much better. But her coat still looks a bit scruffy. I know a puffed up coat and sitting in a corner can mean illness. (She’s not sitting in the corner, still active) But she’s doing much better than before but it’s just her fur still slightly puffed up. One of the other piggies is in heat and is rumbling in everyone’s faces. Could it be stress? Is this normal? Could it just be where she’s still recovering? I’m expecting a call from the vet Tuesday so can talk it through then. But just wondered if anyone on here experienced this after their piggie had Baytril and was recovering?
Thanks in advance.
Josie xx

Why was she on Baytril? Has the original problem been cured or has a different antibiotic been given?
If she is eating and drinking normally, and is active, then those are good signs. Being puffed up is usually a sign of pain or illness, so I would speak to the vet again if you are at all concerned.

Hi and welcome

Could you please tell us what Josie has been treated for with Baytril?
The puffed up coat is not caused by baytril but much more likely by the condition baytril has been prescribed for in the first place as treatment for what ever that is has been stopped. However not knowing what is the underlying issue, I can't comment.

Sows can have strong seasons; if a leader is not well, then this can cause dominance issues.

Could you please add the missing information to allow us a better assessment of the situation. Thank you!

Hello! Thank you. All four of my piggies were given Baytril by the vet as they occasionally made clicking sounds and had been sneezing more often. Because of the situation at the moment. I didn’t see the vet I had hoped to see. Poppy was the only one who reacted to the Baytril and lost her appetite and had an upset tummy. She is currently just having some fibreplex to help her tummy and gut xx

Hello. Thank you! All of the piggies were prescribed Baytril as they were sneezing lots and clicking occasionally. The vet wasn’t massively concerned but gave us the medication to be safe. Poppy actually was the one piggie who was sneezing the most, but she weighed the heaviest and therefore had the biggest dose. And she’s been the only one who has reacted to it (lost appetite and upset tummy) her appetite is back now and poops are getting better. She is currently on some fibreplex to help her tummy and gut xx

If the Baytril is suspended in simple syrup, consider the concentration prescribed and ask about how much sugar the Baytril is mixed with.

My guy was taking huge Baytril doses. Every 12hrs, he took 0.7ml of Baytril suspended in simple syrup at a concentration of something like 15mg per 10ml - dont quote me on that, the old bottle is gone!.... Most of the actual volume was sugar water, which made it taste sweeter. It made him hyper, followed by a sugar crush and gave him tummy problems. I was worried at one point he was in real trouble hunched and hiding with a puffed coat. I told the vet and they switched him onto higher concentration Baytril - way less sugar (would taste yuckier). The new mixture is something like... 25mg per 10ml (again, don't quote me on that!). Hopefully that gives you an idea about what you can ask the vet about though.

I also do probiotics 90 mins after each antibiotic dose. Veggies offered are low gas and low sugar. Any veggies offered that do have a bit of sugar/produce more gas, I only offer directly after giving probiotics and only when the piggy has had normal poops and seems to be eating well and feeling comfortable. Before giving Baytril, I ensure the piggy has consumed some pellets or recovery food to avoid a sour stomach. I also offer Oxbow Digestive support and/or a mint leaf as a treat after baytril to help soothe sour gut. I also offer a variety of fresh hay (Orchard and Oat to mix it up and encourage foraging and intake of food).

These are just things I've found helpful through trial and error and research and my vet tweaking the way the medication is constituted. Keep your vet up to date on changes in symptoms, ask for advice and let the vet know any new routines/supportive care you intend to try. Tummy massages and heat pads - if used safely, properly and gently can help sore tummies. Good luck!

Please switch from the usual life long weekly weigh-in to weighing daily at the same time in order to monitor her food intake and keep a closer eye on her. Contact your vet tomorrow if she is continuing to lose weight or is not looking well.
