HELP - possible URI advice please.

Thanks Glynis - that's sweet. For some reason this one has really got under my skin from the start, maybe because of the circumstances I got her in but anyway I have my fingers and toes crossed for her and if she needs regular metacam well so be it, as long as she stays well.

AWWW - Lotta is GORGEOUS! No wonder you're so devoted to her!

I love the black and red harlequins; I've had two so far, once a coronet as a teenager (she was my sister's technically), and then a few years ago as an aby who went blind, but still lived a very busy and happy life; and was sadly missed when she died.
 
The lovely Lotta is okay. She's having her antibiotics twice daily and the metacam and a dose of probiotics in the middle.

She seems fine actually, the only time she starts to cough is when the metacam is wearing off to it's working as an anti-inflammatory.

Appetite wise she's very much into her veggies thank goodness and she's always on the hay (I have 3 kinds in there right now to get her eating) but not seen her on the pellets. Doesn't mean she's not as the bowl is down significantly from yesterday.

Well she's coughing alot this morning, 2 big bouts so far. :(

She is eating and skipping about fine, so she can't feel very unwell, watching her popcorning now.

Do you think she could manage 2 drops of metacam not one? Or is that something you don't mess about with? (she currently has a drop twice a day)
 
One drop is roughly 0.05ml; I would be inclined to avoid upping the dose unless her coughing worsens further.

Is her cough very dry sounding? I only know of the "greedy pig cough" so have little to go on! Sudafed Expectorant can help with coughs, though I would only give a small 0.1ml dose once a day at the moment. Bisolvon, a secretolic, is sometimes given to pigs with URIs but I don't imagine it would be of great use for a cough.

I would be really interested to know more about the condition Lotta seems to have, it's not something I've come across before! (Not the URI, I know a little about that!)
 
She's okay thanks - currently eating hay happily and she's started taking her antibiotics beautifully too as well as the metacam. She's such a good girl.

After I had given her a large drop of metacam yesterday her coughing stopped but by the time she was due some more (10pm) she had coughed a couple of times again. Nothing like yesterday morning though.

I too would like more information on her condition and I am back to the vets on Friday to see how she's progressing so i will ask the vet some more stuff then. All I know is it's usually hereditary and lifelong but managed primarily by metacam. She will get flare ups from time to time (like this) where she needs baytril. The metacam is amazing - it really stops the coughing in it's tracks.

Anything in particular I could ask the vet you want to know?
 
Good luck on Friday. The name of the condition is mainly what I'm interested in, if possible - we can research it more from there!

It is a contrary view to take but why not stop all medication for a while?
The body will become tolerant of the Metacam and will need an increasing dose to maintain a therapeutic effect.
 
I do plan on stopping it tomorrow. Today is her last day of antibiotics and I will give her a last dose of the metacam too. But the vets advice was stop metacam, see how she manages and only give it to her on days she does cough. Hopefully her lungs wont be so rattly when we see him on Friday as i don't want her to be dependent either and need larger doses. Fingers crossed her coughing subsides without it.
 
Okay no antibiotcs and no metacam and so far no coughing and she's been doing laps in the cage this morning with sizzles. having a ball and whizzing round like crazy. I'm guessing she's fine.

FINGERS CROSSED it stays that way.
 
Lotta got the all clear from the vet. Apparently her lungs are totally clear. The vet seemed very confused by the fact that she was so much better. She has also put on 40g! Is that alot in a week?

He's fine with stopping the metacam but said to listen out for it again and use it whenever she starts coughing again as it may prevent the need for further antibiotics.

No further information on it though sorry - I was in a real rush - off on holiday tomorrow and I have a million things to do!

40g is about 1 1/2 ounces, which is a very good weight gain. She must feel so much better to put up so much!
 
the correct dose for Baytril is 0.2ml twice a day.

Septrin is the drug of choice for UTI or URTI .Baytril is a broad spectrum drug which is better for general infection, wounds etc.
 
Here we go again!
The correct dose for Baytril 2.5% is 0.4ml twice daily. (Unless you are referring to 5% Baytril, when it is 0.2ml twice daily).

As in all drugs it is vitally important to specify the concentration as well as the dose.
 
40g is a great weight gain. She must be doing well, bless her.

I may as well wade in on the Baytril dosage discussion and confuse things further - at what age/weight can a pig have the full adult dose of 0.4ml 2x daily? Or in other words, what age/weight is a pig classified an adult when it comes to treatments?
 
I will give a reduced dose upto six months of age by which time the pig should be at, or even above, half of the final body weight.
However, I would not give Ivomec at all to a pig under six months old.
 
Hey me again - same issue she's coughing terribly again.

I have started the metacam this morning and no coughs since, going to do it twice a day for a week.

Question - should I stay away from the vet or go get more baytril. Reluctant as it's only 2 weeks or so since she finished them last.
 
If the Metacam is working and she is otherwise well and still gaining some weight, I would be inclined to see how she goes over the next few days.

It might also be worth you keeping a record of her coughing incidents - note the temperature/humidity and other environmental factors (like if there is fresh/dirty bedding in the cage), so you can see if anything in particular triggers it. It will also help you see how often it occurs and hopefully help you determine how long you should need to give Metacam for when the problem surfaces.
