For the past 4 nights i have been hand feeding a baby guinea pig as the sow died during child birth. Things seem to be going well, he has a healthy appetite and is generally lively. However, when i went to feed the guinea pig i saw he seems to have a prolapsed anus. I've looked online and the general recomendation is take him to the vet, but with him being so small theres no way they'd be able to operate on him. Another forum suggested soaking in sugar water to reduce the swelling then pushing it back in, and i am currenlty in the process of doing this, currently waiting for the swelling to go down. I was just hoping for some advice on how to progress and see if anyone has some tips (other then going to the vet).

Hi, welcome to the forum, please could you update your location on your profile as it will help with the advice we can give. Sadly I don't have any advice other than to go to the vet. Has the vet themselves said he would be too small to operate on? I am going to tag @Wiebke who may know a bit more about prolapses than I do. Also @Abi_nurse

A good vet will pack the prolapse with manuka honey to help shrink it, but the prolapse may need stitching to hold it up once he can carefully manipulate it in to prevent it from coming back out. Sadly, prolapses are one of the more serious issues where success is not necessarily guaranteed.

I am keeping my fingers VERY firmly crossed for your little one!

The vets told us there was nothing we could do and the kindest thing was to put him down, which is what i decided to do. Thank you for your help and well wishes.

BIG HUGS

I am ever so sorry; it is the news that I have been dreading! :(

it is always so much harder when you have brought a vulnerable baby that far and then you lose it to something so rare and unforeseeable. :(

You are welcome to post a tribute in our Rainbow Bridge section anytime you feel it is right for you and tell us your baby's story to remember it.

Aw, I am so very sorry to hear your sad news. Along with the many joys of owning guinea pigs come moments of tragedy and sorrow, fortunately the good times nearly always outweigh the bad. You take care of yourself.
