I just gave my guinea pigs some beetroot leaves/tops after asking a few people if they could eat them, but just founf this on a website..all my pigs have had them and I'm really worried..have any of yours eaten these and been ok?

'Beetroot and rhubarb leaves, oxalis, potato and its peelings should not be fed to Guinea Pigs, as these vegetables are toxic. Nor should animal products, cakes, white bread or sweets. Excess lettuce may cause diarrhoea. Clean fresh water should also be provided daily.'

Don't worry! Experience counts far more than text book articles these days. Someone said on here that it was fine and I believe that too :)

I've never given my lot beetroot only cos no-one here likes it (human-kind) so don't want to waste it.

Same goes for potato peelings. I have always given mine them with no problems.

Rhubarb and it's leaves ARE HIGHLY POISONOUS though

I found this on the net, hope this helps with feeding your guinea pigs :)

SAFE PLANTS
Broccoli, Beetroot (Not the leaves), carrots, carrot tops, parsnips, Swedes, turnips, cabbage, cauliflower, cauliflower leaves, banana, banana skins, celery, celery tops, Chinese leaves, cucumber, parsley, peas, spinach, watercress, apples and pears (without the pips), melons, agrimony, avens, chickweed, clover, coltsfoot, comfrey, cow parsley, dandelion (in small quantities as it is a natural laxative), goatsbeard, groundsel, goosegrass, hawkweed, mallow, meadowsweet, nipplewort, plantains, shepherds purse, sow thistles, trefoils, vetches, yarrow and lettuce (only in small amounts as it is a natural diuretic).

UNSAFE FOODS
Any plants that are grown from a bulb, all evergreen trees and shrubs, anenome, bracken, bryony, buttercup, celandine, charlock, convulvus, deadly nightshade, dogs/herb mercury, foxglove, hellebore, hemlock, henbane, horsetails, ivy, laburnum, lily of the valley, mayweed, milkweed, monkshood, meadow saffron, wild and beaked parsley, poppy, privet, ragwort, rhodedendron, rhubarb, scarlet pimpernel, snowberry, spurges, toadflax, travellors joy, yew and most docks. Certain docks can be fed but it is so difficult to tell them apart it is best to omit them altogether.

ARGUABLE FOODS

There are some foods that are arguable as to whether they are safe, or even healthy for our little friends. A couple of these are Tomatoes and Potatoes. We would suggest if you do feed these, that it is in small quantities and not to often.

IT ALSO SAYS ON THE SITE, IF YOU'RE NOT SURE ABOUT ANY OF THE SAFE FOODS, LEAVE IT OUT

This is bad news for my guinea, Mabel. She luuuurves tomatoes :(

yeah mine love tomatoes, they dont get them more than once a week though

mine have hjad tomatoes all their lives lol..and my eldest 2 are 5 just over, never harmed any of mine 98)

oh my holly and meggie have 2 or 3 a week there love there tomatos the others wont touch them

Beetroot leaves aren't toxic but they do have a lot of Oxalic Acid in so it isn't advisable to feed them. In general fruits and roots should be fed least, this would include tomatoes which are a fruit and acidic and sugary. I don't feed potatoes- too starchy. In my opinion there's no need for them to be fed cooked either as there are excellent syringe foods on the market...

ah good, i didnt give my piggies anymore after those i gave..they only had around 6-7 leaves between the 7 of them cus i wasnt sure about them.
