I came in today to find his veg, hay and dried food untouched and he looked a bit fed up, took him out and he had a couple of sticky looking poo's stuck underneath. We took him straight to the vets and she said she thinks he's just not agreeing with one of the veg he's getting and gave me probiotic to give. since we put him back at 5 o'clock he hasnt pooed at all and wont touch food. We've syringed him a bit of dried food and some baby food but he is really fighting it more than usual and we offered him some grass and some of the green part of the sweetcorn and he got all excited and started eating really slowly then just stopped. I dont know what to do :'( i think it might be his teeth because he looks like he wants to eat but cant. but it could be his tummy because he had wierd poo's but now there's none. Ive been trying to syringe feed him but i cant even see him propperly through crying he just isnt himself at all. what can i do?! :'(

Hi love oh noooo Ralfie again :'( :'( :'(
Do you think he might have some wind? I'd try giving his tummy a gentle massage with two fingers and gently stroke down his tum towards his man bits do it a few times and then have a listen to his tum.... any noises?? or is it hard to touch if so he might need some infant colic drops....
sending lots and lots of healing wheeeks to a brave little guy :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

Just thought....... a warm cloth on them can help too and syringe him some extra water it might help as well O0 :smitten: :smitten:

Do you have any metacam? If they are in pain they stop eating. I've been at the vets today with Zach because he suffers from spasms of the bowel. When it happens he stops eating and just sits hunched up. When i put fresh food in he looks as though he is going to eat it but then backs away. Usually a dose of metacam does the trick and he starts eating again.

Thanks Glynis and Debbie, that sounds like Ralfie, he's not really hunched up but he's just sitting there looking a bit withdrawn :( i havent got any metacam i threw some away last week could kick myself :( its really worrying me that he hasnt pooed in 7 and a half hours :-\ and all he's eaten is a few blades of grass and the little bit of dry food and baby food we managed to get into him :'(

Just keep syringing bits into him. Zach would only take about 3 mls at a time and then would take another three after a while. If there is anything he will eat keep giving little bits often. You need to try and keep his digestive system working. I really think pain is one of the most likely reasons for not eating. I think you can give paediatric nurofen or calpol too but not sure of the dose. Maybe someone else would know.

Ok, i dont have any neurofen or calpol and everyones in bed :( wish i could drive i'd go and get some. i'm worried about blocking him up though :-\ he's had about 8mls pellets and 6mls baby food and still hasnt pooed :-\

Yep i agree little and often, this will help him and do the massage thing and try a warm water bottle (covered) on his tum as well love O0 :smitten: :smitten:

Ok he's had 10mls of baby food and mashed pellets and 2mls probiotic going to keep giving him that for a bit, he's just had 1 poo and i had to pull it out of him, it was really stringy and had the consistency of snot xx0 light at one end and dark at the other :( does this sound like colic? x

dam i'm no expert sweetie...... he could quite easily have a bit of colic if you can keep the massage and keep the syringing of the water etc.. all night (sorry u r going to get tired) you can then get some medicine in the morning for him and see the vets too O0 :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

Emma I'm no help but Ralfie is such a character and is so strong, stay calm and keep doing what your doing :-*

Kelly if we all support her that is a BIG help and i know she appreciates your friendship too :smitten: :smitten:

Unfortunately the first symptom you get is of a guinea pig who look uncomfortable and off it's food. Palpate the stomach and if there is the slightest kind of tightness flick the index finger against the side. If there is a hollow resonance then it is indicative that the problem is air and not fluid. Be certain to differentiate between the two for the treatment for fluid is totally different and if the one is used upon the other it could be fatal. Once you have established that it is air your are dealing with take the following steps immediately. If they are taken early there is a far better chance of success.
Give one tablet Rennie Rapize, crushed and in 2.5ml of water via a syringe. Follow this with one crushed tablet of Buscopan in about 1.5ml water. Leave for about half an hour and then gently massage the sides of the guinea pig, resting it on a towel. Better still if you have access to one of those vibrating pads that are used for people with artritic or circulation problems in human beings, a good twenty minutes settled on it as in photograph should greatly improves the chance of clearing the blockage.

There are a couple of other products that can help if those I have mentioned are not available. Baby gripe water, about three mls, as an alternative to the Rennie, Dentinox collic drops, 1.5 mls instead of liquid paraffin, However, Buscopan, a gut relaxant and analgesic is a vital item in any G.P. medicine cabinet for it can be used with good effect on several other ailments.

GOT THIS FROM PETER'S SITE.... hope it helps :smitten:

{{{{{{{{{{ hugz }}}}}}}}}} Emma.
Oh Ralfie. :smitten: :smitten: Hope the little fighter is OK. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

Hi emma
had this with pansy. gently flick the side of his tummy (i know he won't like it) soes it sound hollow? is it really hard/tight?
if so it sounds like gas. what always seems to work with pansy is olive oil. syringe 1 teasoon into his mouth and give him a really good massage. the oil reduces the surface tension of gas bubbles, helping release the gas which is present in th form of foam.
yes he will start to fart LOL might want to keep away for a bit after. If he gets dihorrea it's probably cos the olive oil is a weird thing that they wouldn't have. pansy got dihorrea after bloat, so i just put her on hay water and pellets, till the poo was normal again.
if the olive oil doesn't work, what can also help (you'd need to do a while after) is what peter gurney suggests. this is crush one rennie rapize and mix with 2.5mls of water and give through a syringe, followed by 1 crushed buscopan (tablets for IBS in humans) in 1.5 mls water through a syringe. leave for half an hour then give him a good old massage.
i know it's worrying, but try to be calm, pansy's had this twice and she's never had vet treatment (we did see a vet, but they said to do what i've just said) and recovered both times fine O0
