Hey everyone

I think this thread should be posted in health and illness but I'm not too sure. But this morning I was in the guinea pig shed and I was cuddling Cookie and grooming her and stuff and I looked out the window and on the window ledge was a rat. I told my mum and she said not to worry but I didn't believe her. Please help I don't know what to do. My dad is gone in a trip and he would have done something about them. I also have a tiny baby guinea pig who is 13 weeks old so something needs to be done and I'm going on a 3 day trip on Monday so I won't be able to keep an eye on them.:help::ple:

is there not a neighbour that could help. I would buy a trap and set it especially with you having a baby in there. Any chance of bringing them indoors until it is gone?

Hi, CavyLover, my suggestion is that you bring your piggies indoors and under someone's constant supervision. Piggies are helpless animals, it's hard for them to fight back a predator, and stuck in a cage, it's hard for them to run away. According to your description, where you have them now they are just dinner for that rat.

you could get pest control out they will put boxes down your local council will also provide a pest control service make sure all the food is in sealed containers spray all around the outside of the shed with a strong smelling disinfectant. rats can dislocate their shoulders and hips to get under doors they even gnaw through concrete we had a massive infestation when a tree was cut down they had been nesting amongst the roots they would be hanging from the bird tables so no food is put out for the birds anymore. rats are everywhere they say you are only 6ft away from a rat bu t you just dont know it at least you have been lucky enough to see one so you know that you have a problem there will be more than one they breed again and again even when their babies are 3 weeks old they will be pregnant again..horrible makes me shudder!

Hi, CavyLover, I did some research for you, and I think this might help, at least to get you started:
Rat poison, rat traps, peanut butter, dental floss, steel wool, spray foam
Here's what you can do: plug holes where rats hide with steel wool a

Hi, CavyLover, plug rat holes with the steel wool and seal with the spray foam, put a glop of peanut butter on the rat trap and tie with dental floss, this will slow down the rat and give the trap a chance to close, spread rat poison in places where you see rat droppings. Rats eat through wires and infrastructure, so it's not just the piggies. Sorry about your misfortune. Good luck. Keep us posted
