Hi Fellow Piggy Lovers,

I'm one of the admins on the guinea pig community group and as part of the information posters we are creating, I'd like to create a comparison of all guinea pig foods (pellets and museli's) on the market. Similar to this one for rabbits: http://www.therabbithouse.com/diet/rabbit-food-comparison.asp but with Vitamin C and Folic Acid also listed - as these are specifically important for guinea pigs.

I now have a list of 80 guinea pig foods available on the market, however, I have a slight problem in that I cannot find the ingredients for all of them online on the manufacturer websites so I'm not sure how accurate this information is. If you are out and about and see some guinea pig food for sale please could you take a picture or write down the ingredient information and post it on this thread?

The reason for the comparison information is to enable all guinea pig owners to do a comparison on the products available so they can decide what is best for their piggies.

Any help would be much appreciated, Sarah

I am doing a similar project and using part of that to prepare a sticky on pellets for here. I too have found it difficult locating the ingredients for some products though have nowhere near as many as you on my list so far.

Oh brilliant, could we work together then? I don't mind how the information gets out to people, just realised it was something that wasn't available for piggies.

Yes that's fine with me, am only focussing on pellets for the sticky (and hay too). Over anything I would always recommend the Bunny pellets from Zooplus but will make sure that all are listed in the sticky with the relevant ingredients and nutritional information, plus pros and cons. My friend who is a Guinea Pig Health and Welfare specialist has also done loads of research on the different types of food and it was her who originally recommended the Bunny.

Has your friend written up any information on why bunny specifically is recommended?

Only on her own forum but it is low in calcium and protein and has hardly any (or no) fruit or sugars so is good for pigs with bladder issues. It is also grainless which helps prevent issues with Candida. I can give you details of the forum if needed? Mine are on it and have absolutely loads more energy and one of my pigs who had inflammation issues is off the pain relief she was on before.

Oh yes please Helen.

£4.99 for 150g?! How long before you have to re-mortgage your house to keep buying that stuff for your pampered piggies?! lol

I buy 1 big bag which is 4 kg and about £20 and it lasts just over a month. That's 14 pigs having no more than about 5 pellets a day unless Mrs Fuzzy scoffs the whole bowl.

Great idea :) I would be someone who would use this info. Can you give us a list of the ones your struggling to find the ingredients for maybe someone reading this has a bag or their local pet shop does so we get help get you both that info :)
Kell.

Wow, sounds like you don't need to feed them much, though it seems more like starvation lol I'm guessing you feed them other stuff but then I imagine it's more expensive as veg for 14 piggies a day is not exactly cheap!

Is this how many you used to feed other foods before this one?

No I fed way too much before, pellets should be a small part of the diet and they should have a small amount of veg and unlimited hay. I find a large variety of hay as it's what they like best and is the best thing for them. They are big pellets too, about 3 times the size of normal ones at least.
