Oh dear Fuzzypeg has overgrown molars again. I noticed he was chewing slightly oddly (although he's still eating fine and hasn't lost weight) and I insereted the buccal pad wires which I bought off Vedra and can see the two front lower molars are growing over the tongue.

I would take him back to Vedra but am going on holiday on Tuesday! Don't know what to do... my mum is taking care of him but she can't drive long distances at the moment because of her hip.

I have the bone clippers (which Vedra told me to buy) and I do have the guts to trim the molars myself if only I could keep him still... he wriggles too much in the pillowcase or piggie straight jacket. Obviously my wrapping technique isn't up to much!

Cheryl... are you there? You are my only hope!

I would advise going to your local vet to get this sorted!

my local vets are hopeless with piggie teeth... won't do anything without full anesthetic... and even then they don't do a great job... have tried several and it's just a non starter.

Ha! I have an appointment with a local rodentologist tomorrow... trained by Vedra! Perfect outcome!

Oh Charlotte, let me know how it goes. Hope all ok for Fuzzypeg. Could you pm me the details of the rodentologist, as Captain Jack's teeth need doing...

Thanks

Sophie

Good luck - hope all goes well.

How did you manage to find a rodentologist, out of interest? I wouldn't have a clue how to find one round here (or even if there is such a person).

The CCT can pass on details of your nearest rodentologist if you call or text them with your location.

Yes, the Cambridge Cavy Trust will pass on details of rodentologists in your area.

Personally, I exhausted ALL my guinea pig contacts in Norfolk and Suffolk... friends... rescue centres... and luckily struck gold!

They are few and far between though...

I have complete faith that Fuzzypeg will be fine. He has ongoing toothie probs, and usually a visit to Vedra is no problem, it's just this time I am off on holiday so an emergency situation was called for!

You cannot give up at the first hurdle! Get back in there yourself and sort out the problem. That is what it is all about, practice, practice and yet more practice.
I find it is more trouble than it is worth trying to wrap the pig in a towel, put your thumb across the pig's chest, that will hold the legs out of the way. The remainder of your fingers and the palm support the back of the head. I hope your next post tells us of your success!

Thanks AP, I will not give up! :)) It's tough though - I don't think I am putting the buccal pad wire back far enough... I am able to see the molars for all of about 5 seconds before Peg spits the wire out! He wriggles so much too. It seems that I can wrap some piggies better than others... maybe Peg just knows what's coming...

Will keep practicing! Poor Peg will always suffer with his teeth I fear... so I do need to be able to do all this myself! Will gleen as much info and practice as I can tonight... and then get practicing again!

Good luck xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
aren't they wriggly worms rolleyes

Come on Fuzzypeg it's for your own good little one xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxo

C.
Good. I know it is stating the obvious but you can bend the wire as necessary.
As you look into the mouth there is a "fold" of skin on the inside of each cheek. The end of the separators must go past the "fold" otherwise, as you have found, the pig will spit them out.

"Have you considered a burr?"

Do you mean a rotary instrument, in which a burr is the cutting tool, or a file?

Thanks everyone. I'm back home now packing for my holiday... and Fuzzypeg is eating fine!

Just like Vedra... wrap, wires in... snip snip with the bone roungers... all done!

Amazing that Peg hadn't lost any weight as the molars had partially trapped his tongue. Not as bad as when Vedra did them a few months ago but getting that way. A spur on one of the molars was actually digging into his tongue and had made it bleed a little 8...

Poor Peg. This is defo going to be an ongoing thing. Two molar trims in less than 6 months. I desperately need to be able to upkeep myself. Have got the bone roungers, the files, buccal pad wires etc all from Vedra. Have had two rodentologists show me exactly what to do now so I really should have the guts to do it myself.

I am going to practice lots as I simply have to keep a check on little Fuzzypeg's teeth.

Am still badgering Vedra for the dental workshop but so far no joy. Nothing stopping me practice at home now. It really seems to be quite simple once you get the hang of things.

Glynis, if you are interested in this thread, you might like to do another seach on a thread I started. It's called 'Yellow Tooth' and it tells the story of the start of Fuzzypeg's tooth problems.

Just glad all is ok now and that I can go off on holiday in peace.

AP... don't you worry I am certainly not giving up on this one. I've splashed out on all the gear, now I just need to get myself in gear and actually get down to some business! :)

With lots of love from Charlotte and Mr Fuzzypeg x

I am amazed this little fella was able to eat as his lower molars were overlapping each other and he had spurs sticking into his tongue. fuzzypeg is obviously a tough little cookie :(|). Have fun on your holiday charlotte. Maybe next time he needs a dental I can talk you through doing it yourself, you have got to gain confidence sooner or later :))

"It really seems to be quite simple once you get the hang of things."

To a large extent it is but you must always bear in mind what and why you are trimming. 90% of the time there are no problems, it is the other 10% that you need to worry about....

Thanks SGP - you are a star! So glad all is ok. The thought of me eating like a glutton on holiday whilst Fuzzypeg was unable to munch at all was just hideous! Oh dear can't bear to think of it!

Keep thinking about his little tongue with the blood on it :...

Would love to come over for a little tutorial! That's great! Perfect senario!

Right... I'm off to pack my suitcase...

I thought it was pretty obvious what I meant by burring a piggies teeth? :{:{

Fuzzypeg has toothie problems yet again. They seem to grow so fast and I have another appointment this evening to sort them out again. Vedra told me that it might be a 6 week thing... longterm... but it's exactly one month.

Looks like it's something I'm going to have to keep on top of monthly. Poor chap. His mouth is a bit smelly today - rotten food caught in the teeth no doubt. He hasn't lost weight as I keep such an eye on him... but he seems to be so used to this problem now that he really does do his best to eat until it's a critical situation.

I've had pigs give up on eating at the slightest little problem... but my tough little cookie seems to carry on managing...

I have complete faith that all will be sorted again tonight. Will update later!

Charlotte x

Sorry that he is having problems again, but it sounds like you are on top of things and sweet Fuzzypeg is obviously a strong little chap. Good luck for tonight. Did you find a local rodentologist or do you have to go back and forth to Vedra each time he needs his teeth done?

Thank you, yes he's such a sweet boy!

I did go back and forth to Vedra but I found someone really near me (trained by Vedra) so it's ideal!

I still need to get the courage to do it myself... I'll have to 'practice' on another one of my pigs though... Fuzzypeg has been through the wars enough!

Charlotte x

Best wishes to Fuzzypeg!

I am so sorry that his problems have come back so quickly! Atleast you have somebody you can rely on within reach and know *** to look out for before it gets bad again!

Fuzzypeg all ok again. Teeth were as bad as last time if not slightly worse.

It's every four weeks now... but at least he's off death row again for another month.
