so my 3 boys are on fleece bedding which I spot clean daily and wash every 5 days. I washed their bedding on Saturday and cleaned all the corex and sides etc. I then had my nan and grandad to stay with me over Christmas. She kept saying about their smell and I thought nothing of it. I have a bottle of own mixed febreeze spray In my living room I use to freshen my sofas and curtains. It's got a bit of clothes bleach in it diluted with water and anti bac spray with some fabric softener mixed in it. On Tuesday i went over to the guinea pigs and there cage stunk of this spray! I asked my nan and she said she'd sprayed it to freshen it up for me as it was starting to smell! I asked her when she'd done it and she said it was the night before she'd done it! I took it all out and washed it and gave them Fresh bedding but last night I went to get them out for a cuddle and my Peruvian long floppy fur had all gone short like he'd had a hair cut at the front! His skin was fine when I looked, I then checked my teddy and he was fine but my American d.e.w has a patch of fur missing in his back and his skin there is all red and dry and flaky! I've called my vet but he can't get me In till tomorrow! Is there anything I can or should do for him the poor thing? It looks like ecsema does when it gets bad. My nan is 82 and I was so cross but I just told her she must never do that as have to be careful about chemicals around the pigs. I'm so upset and worried about him

Hi,

It can be frustrating when others do things that could affect our pigs but majority of the time it isn't out of badness, just ignorance.

The one with the sore sounds like it could actually be a fungal issue and nothing to do with the febreeze (this would more likely cause a reaction to the feet, genitalia and nose).

The pig that has shortened hair could just be the result of normal barbering but could also be because of some discomfort in the area, possibly from the same issue your other pig has.

Your best bet is to take them along to the vet tomorrow for a proper diagnosis. Please don't treat at home before then.

All the best x
