Hi one of my guineanpigs has been making a strange noise since i got them and today i realised it is mandy i thought it was just an odd noise that they make but i came to the realisation today that i think its a cough! so now i am really panicking as shes done it for a few months and occasional sneezing also does this sound like a uti? so worried and annoyed at myself that i didnt realise it was a coughing noise is this easy to treat? I'm going to try and get her an emergency app tomorrow morning, i have heard this is contagious does that mean i should take the other two pigs also?

How often is she coughing in a day? Occasional coughing and sneezing a few times a day isn’t necessarily a problem, guinea pigs have narrow airways and if they eat too fast it can make them cough - some piggies are greedy and cough a lot, others not much or at all. It’s when it is a sustained cough, hooting or wheezing noises and it’s consistent that it can be a sign of a problem.
Absolutely do speak to the vet though.

Hi!

How long have you had your piggies for? Are they indoors or outdoors?
New guinea pigs: Sexing, vet checks&customer rights, URI, ringworm and parasites
Have you checked for potential irritants in your home?
Irritants to Avoid Around Guinea Pigs

URI is a continuous sneeze every few minutes on end for hours on end; you should also see a fairly quick deterioration with raspy or crackly breathing, eyes and nose caked with green/yellow gunk, loss of appetite etc.

Guinea pigs often sneeze when they piggy clean (about 5 times a day) and they cough if they have eaten to greedily during or after a meal (check when you hear them coughing).

We do recommend to have new guinea pigs registered and vet checked, especially if you have concerns as we can only advise and support you, but are not able or qualified to replace a hands-on vet visit. If you worry, it is worth speaking to the clinic and see whether they want to see your piggy or not.
As to the companions, if they are from the same place, then they have had the same exposure. it depends on how strong their immune system is. Bacterial URI is typically an illnesses that hits piggies with a lowered or weak immune system, especially when it is combined with stress - young pet shop piggies are the most commonly affected, plus the old/frail, bereaved or pregnant in less than ideal conditions.

PS: How many and what gender are yours?

thanks its mainly the coughing she is doing although i havent seen any other symptoms they are all female 3 sisters

If it’s only five times a day then that doesn’t seem excessive to me. Do have her seen by a vet (it’s always best to check these things out) and also check for irritants in the room as wiebke has advised but I would suspect that if this has been going on for a few months then if she had a respiratory infection then she would be really quite poorly by now - we are only guessing though so you should speak to a vet
