Please please help...
My lil Smora has had soft smelly poop since yesterday- really wet and very stinky. Not the usual pellets- a bit longer or mashed or tear shaped etc
She is also doing little sudden squeaks when she poops. Doesn't seem like she's straining or having difficulty - it just comes off like she is startled while its coming out.
This has happened once or twice before. Last time the squeals were much more often and had some trouble getting it out as well- it sounded much much more painful... This time seems way more mild. And she is acting normal otherwise. Eating and drinking etc. Although she is trying to nuzzle up against me a lot, and is not being so nippy- much more kisses and affection.
Could you please advise on where I can find information- I've read a few different things. And last time I got all upset and worried and then it just went away.
? Please advise

if her poop is soft lay off the veggies for awhile, and only reintroduce them slowly when the poop has normalized. Keep track of her weight and make sure she has access to fresh hay and water. I'm no expert but you should have her checked out by a vet. Better safe than sorry with piggies who are so good at hiding their illnesses! Ill tag in @helen105281 and @Wiebke though i think weibke is busy with home life and may not reply. @furryfriends (TEAS) may be able to help as well. Hopefully someone sees this and gives you the answers you need. I hope all is well with your piggy

Thank you so much
I've just read another persons post from a couple years back with the same situation, but It is not allowing me to reply so as to ask what the outcome was.
I've just put a fill of hay inside a toilet tissue roll because I just read that paper and or cardboard can help- and she loves eating paper and cardboard!. I also read that cutting out veggies is best, but on the other hand Spring mix was recommended for its high fiber. Would that be okay to give her and see if it helps? She's eating very well. Or should I wait until toMorrow?

I'm not sure about spring mix as I've never tried it but my boys also love the cardboard! They're going at a toilet paper roll right now. Piggy's have soft poo sometimes just because of too much water from veggies, so unless its persistent or extremely wet/soft i wouldn't stress too much. Sometimes i notice if i spoil my boys with some extra cucumber they give some soft smelly poos! Its the squealing that is worrisome, guinea pigs do not normally make such noises when going, they are supposed to be pro poopers and the squeak to me would indicate discomfort of some sort. My boys are so adept at pooping that when they start pop corning i have to beware of flying piggy poos!

Hi @Noogielove

after so long the threads are locked by admins/mods.

In my opinion I would take your guinea to the vets even if it's just to make sure it's nothing serious and to stop you from worrying.

When mine have squeaked (one still does) when pooing one was doing it because he had cystits and the other does it because he has kidney and bladder stones (I think it's the bladder stone that's causing the pain
?), I'm not saying yours has any of these, I'm just giving you an example of why they might squeak when going to the toilet :)

Helen is usually very good at responding and Wiebke isn't on as much as @Keiko The Pig mentioned.

I agree with everything above, lay off the veg and increase fibre intake, so lots of hay plus cardboard can help too. Make sure she has plenty of fluids too. Do you have probiotics in the US? they would need to be small animal ones. If so, give her those too. I would get her to the vets though as they will need to see why she is squeaking when pooing and may also want to test her poo.

Has she eaten anything different recently?

She was very chubby so I decided to cut her pellet availability to only once a day. And she had iceberg lettuce which I just read is not recommended- but she's had it on occasion before and I never noticed any change... She's stopped squealing when she poops... So that's good. She has a toilet paper cardboard she has chewed on for the night.

I'm not sure about probiotic? I don't know about them- never had to use it. Is it drops? Or food? Would it be at Petco?

Lol. I can't tell you how often I find little poos in the strangest of places..

Thanks everyone.
I think I am just realising that she must have eaten a lot of pellets before, and by taking them away (except once a day) she must not have been getting enough fibre.
Which now leads me to wonder...how can I help her get more healthy? Her weight is a little big and she has never been interested in toys- I play with her every day as that's what she prefers-a couple hours- and that still is not enough to keep the chub down.
I don't have a problem with chubbypig As long as she's healthy

The probiotic I use here in the US as per my vets recommendation is called benebac you can find it at petco or order it on amazon if you happen to have prime. Please don't hesitate to go to the vet if the squeaking returns tomorrow!
I use benebac for a week or so at the first signs of upset tummy or odd poos it helps greatly although most of pigs don't care for the taste much

Yes, if the squeaking comes back or she doesn't get better I'll get a vet involved. I saw benebac yesterday at Petco so I will give it a try. How do you get them to eat it if they don't like the taste?

Does she live on her own or with another pig?
We spend a lot of time with our pigs, but I have noticed that they are most active when interacting with each other.
We aim for floor time (in a large enclosure) at least 5 times a week, and put in lots of interesting (for guinea pigs) toys and hideys.
Plus we scatter their daily ration of fresh food around the run which means they explore and run around.

Lol so many posts. I just hold her and put the tip of the applicator in her cheek then dispense it, they will usually eat it once it's in their mouth

I'm very happy to report that she has had normal poop all last night and today! =)
I gave her pellets to eat, so it's now available to her all the time as it was before. I didn't give her any veggies for a couple days. And she chewed some cardboard. Seems she Is doing great:)

Okay, when I first got her she had an upper respiratory infection and they wanted to take her back and give me a new one()(they're not supposed to allow customers to administer medicine)...I refused and insisted they let me give her the meds at home. They allowed this- because I have volunteered at Petco and helped care for their "back room" guinea pigs- and cats- so I'm comfortable with treating most animals. They even payed for the medicine.
I wasn't about to "take a new one"...
Anyway, I'll get some benebac to have on hand since this has happened twice now.

I have been considering finding her a friend... I've gone to the pet shop a couple times in the last week and debating if I can financially do this. I would take all of them if I could... We spend so much time together and she loves it but I really get the feeling she would appreciate a friend. She's done great with dogs. I guess my concern is that she wouldn't be the Center of attention anymore...and that she has really random, harsh instinctive biting.
I feel crazy saying she won't be the Center of attention. I think her and I would both benefit from another piggy.

Great that she's still doing better! I added a second piggy right away but even so I still spend time with each of my pigs alone I just feel so much better when I got to school and work knowing that she has her sister and isn't alone all day. I recently rescues a pig that I figured had never been with another pig but I know nothing about her except that she was abandoned in a cardboard box, I put her with my bereaved piggy who just lost her sister and they were instantly best friends. My other 2 pigs that I purchased one the day after the other love each but drive each other crazy and are very feisty. All pigs have their own personalities and my 4 don't get along but they each have a partner to keep them happy and I wouldn't have it any other way.
