Today I was at Pet Smart. For those that don’t know Pet Smart is a large chain pet store in the United States. I don’t particularly like chain pet stores as they usually sell small cages and items inappropriate for guineapigs.

While at the store I saw the pet care pamphlets. I was curious what kind of guineapig information they were giving out. To my suprise most of it was alright. However, I read something quite disturbing and problematic. They have the minimum guineapig cage size listed as 12x24 inches. I thought I must have read it wrong at first. I was horrified. This is the information they are giving to first time guineapig owners that may be using this pamphlet as their only information source. At an absolute minimum 7.5 square feet is recommended. I have no idea where they are getting their information. A simple internet search shows multiple credible sources that say 7.5 square feet.

I sent them a well thought out email voicing my concerns and educating them. I also informed them I would be sharing this information on guineapig forums.
I am calling upon the forum to also share your concerns. I hope that there is power in numbers and maybe they will change the information. Wishful thinking maybe but I need to try to make a difference.

I forgot to take a photo of the pamphlet but did find the same information on there website. I have a screenshot below. I have included a link so you can write to PetSmart as well.

I greatly appreciate your help. Let me know if you send them a message. I’m sure you all know, but remember to be respectful and have your message to be well thought out. People typically don’t listen of your just typing angry words :)

Well spotted where have they got the guide lines from. I personally would get a person in power on the subject of keeping pets to bring this to their attention. Here in the UK General public comments to shops or selling piggies on standards are ignored. Why cos you can't educate thick people who are blinkered to Animal welfare.
try your animal protection centres get them to take up the issue.
Personally I would put some people in a small cage with little movement and no toilet see how long before their stupid thick brains regester. DOH

Cleaning out once a month:yikes: poor piggies and in such a small cage too double:yikes::yikes:. Mine get a total hutch clean at the very least once a week and more often if I have the time or they are confined to the hutch cos of bad weather.
I know :( it makes me so sad. I can only hope the people reading this information are smart enough to know that’s obviously too small and needs to be cleaned waaaay more. I cannot imagine how bad my piggies would smell if I only cleaned once a month. Not to mention how bad the would be for their little lungs.

I measured out what they say is minimum cage requirement and put Dexter in it (he needed a carrot as a bribe to stay in the photo lol) That’s without a house, food bowl, etc. imagine how little room would be left once adding those things :(

We have a litter tray larger than that :mal:

It's barely bigger than the box I use for Zebedee's nebuliser sessions - or the carrier they go to the vets in. And except in emergencies I wouldn't leave one pig in those for more than an hour or two, certainly not two pigs. It would be like being confined to bed for the rest of your life.
