I

ILOVEMYPIGGIES!

recently my piggies been ill went to the vet today and he said she had a uri which wasnt that bad. Thank god.
Hes give me baytril and we can syringe it into her but he 0.4 of the liquid once a day and the lass at the counter said "it was up to here" which is only 4 black lines up.
its a 1ml syringe which goes 1 0.9 0.8.................0.4....0.1
So do i give her nearly half the syringe or the 4 little black lines at the bottom? I'm confused and i dont wonna kill her :/

0.4 ml of baytril is the correct dose and is nearly half of your 1 ml syringe (which is the smallest syringe you can get), but you should give it TWICE daily for an adult guinea pig to make sure that it really clears off - cystitis can be very tenacious!

Make sure that you get some probiotics to help counter the harsh effect of baytril on the guts (the poo will go soft). You can get them from your vet or try p@h. They may have some. You give a bit an hour after the baytril. It will make your girl feel a lot better in herself.

Buy unsweetened cranberry juice (Ocean Wave light is widely available in supermarkets) and give that with a bigger syringe, as much as your piggy will take - up 10-40 ml (which is a multiple of your little syringe). If necessary mix it with water. I give mine half juice/half water; it's not as tart that way.
If you can't get hold of cranberry juice, give as much water as you can to help flush out the infection.

Syringes you can get at your pharmacy; ask for a 10ml one.

I'm sending my best wishes to your poorly girl and hope that she'll get better soon! Make sure that she is warm and cosy.

Each line on my syringe is 0.05 apart but just look for where it says 0.4. My vet told me to give baytril for 10 days and then go back if it was not ok. Hope your piggies UTI clears up quickly like my girls xx>>> hugs for poorly piggy.

Kay am really confused. he said to give it once daily i heard that for sure. both my piggies have had it once before so am going to give her 0.2 and go back tomorrow
they had 0.2 last time they had it and got through it fine...

Cystitis? :{ I'm fairly sure since you posted about the breathing probs, your piggy has an upper respiratory tract infection. 0.4mls would be nearly half of your 1ml syringe, 0.5ml would be exactly half so 0.4mls is a little less than this. You can mix with squash or water to dilute if you wish. Draw the Baytril up to 0.4mls first then add whatever to make it up to 1ml.

If I was you, I would pop back to your vet. Get them to show you the dosage via the syringe as it can be confusing. You should draw the syringe up to the appropriate black line. If in doubt, please do check as getting the right dosage into a poorly piggy is critical.

Good luck and let us know how you get on. Healing vibes to your piggy! x>>
