I'm new to this forum thing, so please forgive me if I do/say something wrong!
I am hoping that someone has had the same problem that I'm getting....?
I've just noticed that one of my girls (age4) has got sores around her girlie bits. She is very wet around there too. She squeals when she wees but in every other way appears ok. (Health coat, eating, drinking ok)! I have a group of 5 girls who live outside on vet bedding, which I wash at 60 monthly. They are fed dry mix, hay and I pick fresh grass for them daily, which I supplement with "Redigrass" in the winter months. Over the last 12 months I have had 4 girls die with similar symptoms..... so please don't tell me to go to the vet as that hasn't worked so far!

Hello and welcome.

I'm very sorry to hear your girl is unwell but I'm afraid she must see a vet for a proper diagnosis and the correct treatment.

Leaking urine and squeaking in pain whilst urinating could be a urinary tract infection which is treated with antibiotics and pain relief / anti inflamortary. Cystities which is treated the same as a uti. Bladder sludge / bladder stone. Only an ultrasound scan and / or X-ray can diagnose stones and I'm afraid if she does have a stone, surgery to remove it is highly likely.

What diet and veg are you feeding your guinea pigs? Guinea pigs should ideally be fed a low calcium diet as too much calcium can cause bladder stones and / or sludge. I'm afraid redigrass is very high in calcium and should be fed sparingly x

Hi and welcome!

Please have your girl checked for a urinary tract infection (URI) or cystitis. there are several issues lumped together which are not easy to tell apart and which may need a scan or x-ray.
the symptoms you report could also be caused by a fluid filled, pyometric womb; so make sure that your vet checks that option, too.

Please bring her inside and weigh her daily to check her food intake. If necessary, top her up with syringe feed.

The sore, bald area around the genitals is classic for urine scald. Please clean the area gently with hand warm water and then apply mild nappy rash cream. Change the bedding area once daily to prevent her from sitting in the wet.

Unfortunately for you, your girl REALLY needs vet care! Her problem is definitely not going away on its own and is not getting any better on its own.
We have got a recommended UK vet locator on the top bar, but can provide a link to a list of recommended vets in some other countries if wished.

Since we have members and enquiries from all over the world, we find it very helpful if you please added your country, state/province or UK county to your details, so we can tailor any advice to what is available and relevant where you are and how piggy savvy the vet is that are using, so you can ask the right questions and get the best out of him to save your piggy's life.
Please click on your username on the top, then go to personal details and scroll down to location. This makes it appear below your username in every post you make. Thank you!

I agree with all the above comments.please use the vet locator at top of page.place your postcode in and it will come up with your nearest cavy savvy vet, which will be able to treat your piggie competently.I use vet bed,i wash it at 60 degrees every three days, and sweep poos twice aday.Hope your piggie gets well soon.

I recommend washing bedding more frequently, wet bedding is not good for anyone.
My two are on fleece which is very similar to vet bed, it gets changed about 3 times a week and washed in hot water. (60 degrees)

Same thoughts as everyone else, definitely a vet visit.

I use vet bed too for their beds and I change it every day. Maybe if it's been a wee bit wet she's been sitting in it
