Can someone please help?! I have a male guinea called paddy who has recently had trouble weeing and pooing. We took him to the vet last Thursday, the vet felt for bladder stones but couldnt find anything wrong. She gave us a 10-day dose of Baytril and administered Paddy with an anti inflammatory injection. We thought he was making progress, not eating many pellets but vitamin c veg and water from a syringe to try and flush out the infection. However 10 days have gone and tonight he is really squeaking in pain, there are signs of blood and his poo keeps getting stuck we have to clean it out

Help!

You need to Xray for stones, if he's not passing urine contact your emergency vet.

He really does need a vet sooner than later, at the very least for pain killers.

Sound like your poor boy has a few bits going on. Unfortunatly bladder infections can be hard to shift at times. If he has finished the Baytril it may simply be reoccuring. Pop back to your vet, ask for a different antibiotic, Septrin is pretty good for UTI's. He may also benefit from a quick conscious xray or his bladder or an ultrasound. But see what your vet thinks. How do you mean about his pooing, is it getting stuck in a huge clump like impaction? Or is it like diarrhoea?

Its just clumping, at first it was very small poops they are a bit bigger now but still stuck. They are normal consistency. He is eating hay and veg still but we are giving him fluids through a syringe. I'll phone the vets first thing on monday morning and make an appointment ASAP! Thanks. Anything I could do in the meantime tomorrow to relieve the pain!

If bladder stones are an option, you will have to ask for an x-ray, preferably without GA, or with only very light sedation. It can affect the pooing as well as the peeing.

We usually do not recommend using human medications unless absolutely unavoidable, but you can give 0.2ml of the weakest form of small children's calpol from the pharmacy.

If you can, ask your vet for some metacam next time you see him so you have a little bit of painkiller at home.

PS: To shift a UTI, you will usually need about a 3-4 week antibiotic treatment; they are tenacious! Septrin (an oral form of the US bactrim meantioned in the UTI link) is the preferred antibiotic; baytril is the only licensed AB for guinea pigs, but it can play havoc with the guts. If there is no improvement after about 3 days, I would check for bladder stones. Please always ask for a probiotic when an antibiotic is prescibed, especially baytril!

PS2: Please weigh an ill piggy daily; scales don't lie about the true food intake!

my pig had these problems.

if the medicine didnt work ask for stronger medicine or a longer course. soak pellets, hay and veggies( careful what ones you give ) and keep an eye on him. you may need an xray, this will give you a better idea of whats wrong and how you can fix it x

Thank you its a real help! I was panicking especially with it being a weekend! Its nice to know there are lots of owners who have had the same experience as I have! Will be making paddy an appointment tomorrow asap and at the moment we are just giving him his meds, vegetables (as its the only thing he is liking) and water, along with lots of cuddles in his favorite blanket. I'm also changing his bedding daily so there is no urine in there going stale.

xx
