So I'm watching the guinea pigs of my neighbours becouse they are on holiday.
Today was the first day, they live in my home for the nest 6 weeks.

Earlyer today I found out that one of them (named Pikachu) has diarea. Now I just looked again, to see how he is doing and now he has something hanging out of his mouth! It's like some sort of lump that looks suspiciously like his tongue! And he is in pain, he makes those sad noises :(
I'm going to the vet ofcouse, but I can't go there until tomorrow evening!
What can I do to help him till then? I'm afraid He will die tonight :O

I hope you can help me!

has he eaten some thing he shouldnt?has he could have been poisoned or even stung really does need the vet your vet should have emerg out of hours x

Is his tongue swollen, if so it sounds like an emergency, possibly allergic reaction that needs help fast.

Have you changed his food from what it normally is? That could explain diarrheoa or that could be from a severe allergic reaction too.

I don't want to scare you, but it does remind me of my dog who had an allergic reaction (from a vaccine) and her tongue swelled and she had diarrhoea, and she died :0 If it was a reaction to something he'd need an injection I think, my dog got one but it was too late . . .

I would just give him water and hay to try to stop the diarrhoea. Make sure he is drinking something. If you can then get him to an emergency vet.

Is he still eating/drinking, poohing, walking around, or is he weak and not moving much? Is he having trouble breathing?

Yes, he is still eating and poohing and walks around, not that much becouse he is obviously looking sick, his furr as standing up. And he did have trouble breathing, but that's over now :S I really don't know what it could be :O

And I set him on a hey water diet the first thing when I noticed he had diarea, must have been about 2/3 o'clock this afternoon, it's almost 12 o 'clock now. And I didn't gave him any food yet since he's been here, we picked him up this morning becouse my neighbours left this morning, I don't know what they gave them to eat...

I'm glad the breathing trouble has gotten better now anyway. His fur sticking up is a sign that he is sick.

Would you be able to call his owners and ask them if he ate anything unusual or if anything happened? Also that way they would know what is going on, in case the worst happens, or maybe they know an emergency vet you could go to or something.

Hopefully someone comes along with more advice soon. I hope he's ok.

Nope, the owners are on an airplane to Australia by now, and they didn't bring a phone becouse they're gonna buy one over there... And they don't have any special vet or anything, they're the ones who always come to me for advise, since I study for veterinairian assistent.. No, my neighbours wouldn't even see something is wrong with a piggy when it acts like this. And if he dies they said they didn't want to find out until they got back, becouse it would ruin their vacation (I would want to know eighter becouse then their would be nothing they could do about it anyway).
But tomorrow morning someone who knows a lot about piggys to is coming to look and in the afternoon I'm going to the vet, hope he survives,

I need to get some sleep now, thank you for your help!

Xx Miriam

I strongly recommend seeing an emergency vet. It could be poisoning or an allergic reaction. Your piggy sounds severly ill and needs to be seen as quickly as possible. Guinea pigs cannot vomit, so everything that has gone in needs to come out the other end.

You may be able to get an out of hours contact number from your vet's answering machine.

Otherwise try the guinealynx medical forum that is attached to this website:

Good luck and I hope the guinea pig will be ok, let us know tomorrow if you can.

he's doing a lottle better today, he is not poisoned, it would look diffrent...

I think maybe his molars (don't know if that's a good translation) are to long, they might have ripped it's ckeak open from the inside and the left skin might have been what came out... That's gone now, he's still in pain tough :(

I can se a vet in an hour, so we're now going to prepare to leave.

Best of luck. I hope that you can get to the bottom of it, poor boy. I am glad that he is better and has made it through the night. I was very worried!

Hope there's good news from the vet, and I'm glad he's feeling a bit better

Thanks for all your support!

I'm still kinda worried that they have to put him down :(
But we'll see, There is also stuff coming out of it's mouth :O
I know they can't throw up but there must be some sort of infection in his mouth... And he hasn't eaten all day.

Do you know how long a guinea pig can survive without eating or drinking?

If he's not eating/drinking then you will need to syringe feed liquid food (Supreme Recovery or Oxbow Critical Care) 5-10ml every 2 hours.....to keep him alive and give him a chance to fight whatever he has

What did the vet say? Have they prescribed antibioitics - if so what kind and what dose?

x

I went to the vet,
There was a lot of food stuck in his throath :S
Probably some sort of abcess in his troath :o
I got intibiotics (enrofloxoral, don't know if you have the same over there since I live in the Netherlands...) and liquid food. I hope he survives but I don't think so :( He does want to eat but he just cant eat hay or anything like that becouse it stays stuck :O

I just got a new idea,
My neighbours have bamboo in their garden. Could it be that Pikachu ate some of this stuff and is now stuck somewhere in his tummy?
That would explain why he can't eat more, bamboo leaf doesn't digest :O
