Hi i got 2 new guinea pigs today from someone who didn't want them. when i inspected them they have tiny yellow things on them. They are long haired ones and the male has very thin fur on his back, is very scaley and looks like he has been itching for a while as there are a few dried scabs on him. the other one i can see the yellow things but she is not bald.

My question is i have some g.g lice shampoo, do i bath them or do i take them to the vets for the injectable ivermectin? I also have Neem stuff form g.g but can't remember what that is for.

Does the shampoo help the lice that can't be seen my the naked eye?

Many thanks

If you email Chrissie with piccies or just explain she will advise the best shampoo. i used lice and easy as it sounds like lice but they may have mites too. She is fantastic and she'll get it to you asap.

it does help, its brill just have ot do once and do again next week to kill the eggs that have now hatched x

i adopted 2 piggies from pets at home in july and they had lice i used lice and easy and a nit comb and i soon got rid of the lice good luck with your new piggies

thankyou both for reply, des that mean i don't need to take them to the vets?

you should be able to treat them at home, i did. i would initially but if thei condition worsens or does not improve, then take them to vets.

If I were you I would contact Chrissey at Gorgeous Guineas ASAP and explain their symptoms.

The baldness and scabs ring alarm bells with me $as these are symptoms of mites, (from what I understand) - which can only be treated with Ivermectin. From what I have read bathing the piggies whilst they have mites is painful and sends the little critters deeper under the skin causing more discomfort to the piggy.

It might be worth having them checked over at the vets regardless of whether Chrissy thinks they have mites or not.

G.Pigs hide illness very well, and as these have come from someone who had lost interest in them they may not have been as astute to their health as you would be.

Oh, gosh - where are my manners? Welcome to the forum and well done on taking these piggies in :))

I agree with you on this,it sounds as if one piggy has mites and the other lice. The mites can only be treated with Ivermectin from a vet.If they are not treated the gp will start to have fits from the irritation.Ivermectin will not get rid of the lice so shampoo based on Neem will be needed. You can get this from any health food shop.
I personally now never buy any kind of shampoo, lotion or meds from the internet unless the seller has another outlet like a shop.there is no regulation on stuff on the internet, and more and more cases are coming to light wherein drugs, toilteries etc have contained dangerous chemicals. In any caser, why pay expensive postage on stuff you can get just as cheaply and more safely from the High Street.

ok thanks that was what i was worried about that the shampoo would only kill one set of crawlys and the guinea pig would still suffer. i will take them straight to the vets tomorrow.

Is there anywhere online i can buy Ivomectin as i have 10 guinea pigs. I used to get it from Cobweb but he no longer sells it. I have always been confused about mites/lice and what the difference is. At one time i had 5 g.p with it and it cost me over £30 at the vets!

Thankyou so much for all your advice, so nice that people care enough to post a reply. thankyou
