Help with a UTI - Pebble

Hiya. I’ve just got back from a week away and I have collected the boys from my friend. Once home I have noticed a spot of blood in the carrier. Not massive.

So I’ve put the boys straight onto white covers to see who is bleeding and it’s Pebble (of course it’s Pebble). There were quite a few patches but no squeaking from him.

My friend reported no issues last week and did say that Pebble was the more demanding of the two. Begging for food and generally being very active. Since being home I have noticed NO signs of pain or reduced appetite. He is acting normal.

If I hadn’t seen the spot of blood I would be none the wiser.

So off to the vets this afternoon and he’s on Baytril for a week. They didn’t prescribe pain killers as he really didn’t show any signs of pain. They did say I could call in a few days if I thought he was in pain to get some pain meds.

I’ve given him ABs at 4pm and then I’m giving Pro C an hour later.

I’ve never had a piggy with a UTI so any help would be appreciated. What worked well for your piggy?

He’s eating, drinking. Begging. Not sure about any weight loss yet until tomorrow morning.

The vet said buy Vitamin C biscuits for him to make sure he’s in good shape. I did say he had a wide variety of veggies so I didn’t think he needed vitamin C supplements. What are your thoughts on this?

Also any thoughts on glucosamine supplements? I’ve never used/bought these. So advice on these would be appreciated too. Thanks everyone. 😍

Oh Pebble 😞

It sounds like you have everything under control and are doing the right thing. I’ve personally never given vitamin C as an extra supplement with my own piggies who’s had UTIs but I did feed extra cucumber to help flush the bladder out.

He may need longer than a week on the baytril. I think 2-4 weeks is the norm.

If he’s still bleeding after that, ask your vet for Septrin which is the better antibiotic for UTIs but hopefully the baytril will be sufficient.

Hopefully Pebble will not experience any pain but it’s good your vet will prescribe it if he does develop any.

I am very sorry. It can take around 5 days for symptoms to become consistent so this one-off porphyrine coloured red pee is pretty typical.

Just see whether the antibiotic works since the onset and symptoms of UTI and IC are pretty much the same. But it is not what you want to come home to. However, the stress of being away can often be what tips the scales as it can lower the immune system.

Hopefully it’s been caught early and will clear up quickly. Should I be getting glucosamine? 🤷🏻‍♀️
 
We are also currently treating both Carson and Bodie for UTI. They are both in antibiotics (trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole) and Loxicom for 10 days. Both had blood in their pee when the vet did a dipstick test, even though their pee were clear. Carson only showed actual blood after the vet did physical exam and felt his bladder, which only showed for a couple of days. Carson only has started eating by himself again today (he hasn't had any CC today and he's maintained he's weight at 1050g). He stopped eating last Sunday that's why we took him to the vet. Bodie stopped eating on Tuesday but after just a day of meds, he started eating again on Wednesday and hasn't showed any signs of issues at all since. Fingers crossed they both will get rid of the UTI after the medications and get back to their normal, well especially Carson.

Hoping your Pebble will also recover from UTI. 🤞 ❤️
 
Poor Pebble and poor you. Timmy had blood spots and squeaky wee just before Christmas. Vet thought cystitis rather than infection so we didn't have Abs. It did clear up within a week, he had Metacam and Cystease from the vet. I have had vets suggest extra vit C when they have been ill but I've not bought supplements, Pro C has vit C in it anyway so I don't think you need anything else. I'm sure your boys have a good diet.
 
I use Cystophan for Dori’s IC and it definitely helps but takes a while for it make any difference - in the region of 2-3 weeks I’d say. If Pebble is prone to UTIs or bladder problems, then it might help him.

Thank you. This is his first one. Hopefully his last. I’ll bear that in mind. Hope Dori is doing okay.

As you know Sir George has SC. I started giving him glucosamine after he seemed prone to uti's. I don't always have metacam but, ON VET'S ADVICE, I have baby paracetamol. I also have dipsticks to check for blood.
Since the diagnosis he rarely gets antibiotics but I do give probiotics every time. I'm lucky that he never loses his appetite.
Healing rumbles from Sir George and cute mini rumbles from Scruffy Squire Bob.
 
So weighed him this morning and he’s lost 65g this week. Not a massive amount but he’s still 200g lower than before he had his teeth issue in January.

I’ve topped him up with CC. He ate about 45ml straight off! I got some Pro C in there too so win win. He’s still perky in himself.

Pebble, I think you should pretend to be ill just before Betsy turns up with her suitcase! Don't be fooled by her deep pockets either! She sounds like a bad'un to me...
 
So Pebble has been on Baytril since Saturday afternoon.

He’s still peeing what looks like blood.

But it’s not drying like I would expect blood to dry

I’ve had a read of the pee guide but I’m still unsure if it’s actually blood.

Anyone have any experience with UTIs? This is my first time dealing with one.

Pebble is acting absolutely fine thank goodness.
