I have had my two rescue boars for about 2 weeks now. They were both very nervous and upset when they arrived but Jeeves, my black and tan piggie, has really come out of his shell and is a friendly chap at heart. x) I can check him over very easily and I think he is about 2 - 2.5 years old.
However, Google is totally petrified of me. He is older than Jeeves, maybe about 3. He goes into a wild panic when I try to offer him veggies and if I try to touch him he screams and runs round. I have been trying to slowly get him used to me and I was in no way going to push him to come round faster than he wanted to.
The problem is I noticed his bum looked like it was all stuck together with poo. :{ So I picked him up to take a look at him. He absolutely shrieked the neighbourhood down! :o I tried wrapping him in a towel and had a friend hold him whilst I trimmed it away, shampooed and dried him bum. It looks a little sore and he looked swollen underneath.
Now I have never had boars before, only female guinea pigs when I was a child. I had no idea about 'impaction' and wonder if this may be the poor lads problem? I have not the faintest clue about how I am going to treat him as he is so so so difficult to handle and is so frightened of me. Does anyone have any tips... step by step guide? He is eating normally and is pooing normally, although he NEVER takes food from me.
I have contacted the vet and chatted with them and he will go to see them if it does not clear up but they said that due to his nervous disposition I should try their suggestions before I traumatise him with going in the car and to the vets.
If only his previous owners had taken the time to handle him. I get the feeling he was harder work than the other one to handle so they just gave up on him and handled Jeeves instead. grrrr
