Hello, i'm sorry i'm a first time poster and without contributing anything would like some help.

My guinea pig, is about a year and a half old, white in colour, sleek fur. Yesterday night he sorta made loud breathing sounds then thrashed around the cage violently and then slowly passed out on his back. i picked him up and gently patted him on his back as the first thing that somehow popped into my mind was "he might be chocking" after a few seconds he moved his paw and i set him back down then he returned to a slightly shellshocked but normal stage.

I brought him to the vet today. The vet said " He's doing fine! As lively as ever o-o He was probably scared or something"

All was well until a few minutes ago, (25hours after the first incident) i was about to go to sleep when i heard thrashing again. Fearing the worst i turned on the light and this time he was fainting in his usual form (belly-side down). I did the same thing, picked him up, patted his back gently and now he is okay again.

I would really like some help with this ><

Thanks alot in advance!

PS: if there was a sticky-ed or earlier thread with a sympthom similar to what my guinea pig is having, i apologize and please direct me to it.

Thanks alot again.

Thank you for your reply!

But the thing is, he didnt twitch on the same spot. he ran haywire around his cage as though he was really scared and then just turned (belly up) and stopped struggling then he stopped moving at all as tho he was dead.

I dont know what to do. The vets are closed at this time and the vet assured me this morning that he is fine..

Where abouts are you?

Was the vet one who knows about guinea pigs as a lot of them dont?

Is he fine in every other way, ie. pooping, peeing, eating, walking, acting normal self?

uh, well i'm in Malaysia currently i understand this is a UK forum but i'm really desperate and i apologize again.

the vet seems to know quite alot about cavvys. he says he has a pair of them himself so he says and he was able to handle them well.

EDIT : yeah he is pooping eating drinking and everything as normal except he seems kinda blur as he was last night after the first incident

Hello and welcome to the forum. :)

Sorry I cannot help with your problem as I have never experienced anything like that but just wanted to say I hope your piggy will be okay.

Although mainly a UK forum we have members from all over the world and everyone is more than welcome.

Hope someone can help you and your piggle.

xx

This link may help you find a good vet in your area.

I have had a pig with siezures, his were brought on by a heavy mite and fungal infestation before he was rescued. Although the mites and fungal were treated he never stopped having seizures. They were triggered by him scratching a very sensitive point on his back, so it was protected by him wearing a piggy jacket to stop him being able to scratch himself there.

I hope the vet will be able to find the cause, best of luck to you and your piggy.

Hi! I am sorry about your problems. Like most of us, I have no personal experience; you are up against something pretty rare, I'm afraid.

You may find access to more qualified help through these two links:

I hope that you will still remain a member of this forum! We would like to "meet" you and your guinea pigs when you have the leisure to do so!

thanks for the link!

Well uhm, the vet i went to checked the ears and the skin for any abnormilaties and things like that and then he said that my guinea pig is perfectly healthy :( and uhm i do have another guinea pig with him. they are brothers i think, got them at the same time from the same cage and the thing is, the other piggy aint having any problems at all and looks at my poor piggy like "O_o whats happening!"

D:

also nothing drastic happened that might have triggered it, no loud noises or anything like that D:

Uhm. This is the piggie here :)

He is a gorgeous boy! What is his name?

Your vet did the right thing with checking the ears - ear infections can cause head tilts and stroke like symtpoms; and they can kill if not treated asap.

We get the very occasional piggy with neurological problems, but non that have had your exact symptoms. I really hope that you can find out what is causing the fits and stop them.

This one is Mickey :D i remember when i got him and his friend/brother (Jackey) he was so curious about the surroundings and always surprized at the food bowl that kept filling up xD he's always been braver than Jackey.

Thanks for the replies and stuff i really do appreciate it. Well uhm the heart thing might be viable but i'm not sure if my vet did check his heart. he held him close to his ear for a while but that might be to look for wheezing?

Will heart problems cause the sympthoms my piggy is having? D:

It was late last night and i fell asleep >_< Sorry! Well, its morning now and they look fine . _ . still worried tho ><

Sadly, heres another update. Everything was until a few minutes ago, he had the same thing except i realize there is less thrashing about. could that mean that he is getting weaker everytime?

Also i realized that at the end of the episode and after he makes a sort of crackling sound? and he looks like he is trying to puke. Except nothing comes out and after a while he seems normal again. (with the numb/blur look)

Gah.. i thought everything was going to be okay..

Also, i am not sure if this is related, but after holding him while he was freaking out and stuff, this thing was on my hand. I cant really say if it was there before holding him tho.

it is like a gel like substance. The thing is, the white gel itself is not sticky, but the area around it is.

I would take him back to the vets and if they don't look into it further then I really would try and find another vet. I can't offer any advice but I really hope you find out whats wrong with him soon.

Update : He just sneezed 5 - 7 times in a row. Seems to be constantly cleaning his nose and much easier to be startled.

Oh that sounds awful, good job you've come to this forum where you can share your worries with all of us piggy lovers. Hope he gets proper treatment for this. Good luck. :{

Poor little guy! I wish I knew what to tell you! I would wonder about seizures... I had a pet mouse who used to have seizures. She would fall down and twitch and would actually go stiff- a couple of times we actually thought she was dead. Then she would gradually come around, she would be wobbly and we would give her some water and a treat (usually honey nut cheerios for the sugar rush!) and she would come around. She lived to be about two and a half, which is a normal age for a mouse, but she intermittently had seizures her whole life. I'm not sure if there is medication that can be given to small animals, but I would ask about that possiblity.

UPDATE : in the past 2 hours mickey has had 4 more of those episodes. there is not much trashing about anymore. he seems to be suffocating each time.. meanwhile jackey keeps trying to take this opportunity to prove himself more dominant so i've seperated them. ive carefully placed mickey in a comfy towel and into a big box. the vet opens at 9am. its 4.20am now. the signs before his episode begins for now is; his eyes either go backwards or forwards unnaturally, he nods his head upwards, and then he colapses a little struggling for air and then hhe twists and turns while he suffocates (i presume) i think the crackling sound i mentioned earlier was him trying to unblock his nose/airway. after awhile he lays still (all the whille i'll call out to him and gently pat him) then a few seconds of laying still he will stand up again. but in the same numb/blur look.

Sounds like a type of seizure. Sounds horrible, but may you could film it and show it too the vet. There are medications that can be given for things like this if its simple epilepsy.

I really hope your piggie starts to get better and gets a proper diagnosis.

x.

I had a discussion with my mom, the nearest proper guinea vet is about 45 minutes away by car, mickey is absolutely terrified by car rides, i am afraid the car ride itself will scare him to death at this point. He is afraid of everything, of me, of jackey. I have set up a seperate cage with towels as bedding in fear that he might break his bones or something while struggling.

I havent seen him drink any water for the past 3 hours. I dont know. My mom says to let him be and if his time is up he will pass away.

I have set him up with some pellets some hay and a heavy bowl with some water. It feels monstrous to let him suffer.

What do you guys think?

Hi i've been looking around on the internet and came across this information.....

http://www.fuzzieskingdom.com/herbs/remedies/seizures.html

Everything i have seen so far has said seizures and mites together........ you said your vet checked his ears, did he look inside them with one of their ear scopes (sorry no idea what it's called) as one of the things i saw on the internet said how her piggie had puss very deep inside the ears :{

I hope you can find a vet who will consult with another one for you.

That white gunk on your arm is boar glue rolleyes

I forgot to say welcome to you Mickey and Jackey and i'm sorry that your first experience on here has been because of a sick piggie :(

HEALING WHEEEEEKS FOR MICKEY XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

It really does sound like seizures to me... can the vet give him some sort of anticonvulsant to see if he improves on the meds? Not sure what is available out there for piggies, but I know they do make anticonvulsants for dogs and cats. ((HUGS)) and hoping for the best for him!

Hey guys, thanks for the support. Mickey isn't moving much at all but at least he is till drinking and eating. I contacted a place with vets that are specialized in cavvys. Sadly he cant make it to my house because its too far and i'm not sure if mickey is ready to be on a car ride. I'm definately bringing mickey there on saturday tho. Meanwhile the vet asks me to try and videotape mickey when he's having an episode or something.
