so I just came back home and found that my guinea pig gave birth. I have two females and one male, I took the male and put him in a cage alone but I'm not sure about the other female... should I put the mother and the newborn alone and the other female with the male or can both females stay in one cage with the new-born baby? and when can the male return? I'd like all 4 to stay together in one cage. And what are the baby's needs? I wanna make sure everything's alright so if anyone can give me a small guide I'd be beyond grateful..B

OK, well I am not an expert on pregnancy and newborns but I can give you a bit of advice while we wait for more experienced members to come along. Basically, the first thing that you nee to be aware of is that this is a pro-rescue, anti-breeding forum due to the number of unwanted guinea pigs that are in rescues. So while we are happy to help with any other advice there isn't a single member on this forum that will give you advice on putting the male back with the females.

Chances are that your other female is pregnant as well so I would be watching out for more babies popping along.

Best end results is that you keep all the females together in one cage (if the current cage is big enough) and that one of the babies is a male and you can house him in a different cage with your other male.

As I said - I am no expert on pregnancy and care of newborns but you will find some useful info on this forum but there will be other experienced members coming along later on today who will be able to give you tons more info.

Personally - I would love to see some photos of your piggies when you get a chance.

I'm not experienced in this either but I've read plenty of posts from other who are, so the information leads me to say:
Yes, best to keep the two sows together, they are not likely to fall out and your other sow may make a good 'auntie' for the babies.
Please keep the Dad separate from now on. As cute as babies are the endless cycle of pregnancy can get out of hand very quickly and you may find yourself with an overwhelming situation of too many guinea pigs and sows who's bodies are suffering from over-work.
Your options, looking to the future, are to either get the Daddy neutered and put him back with the sows after six weeks or if one of the babies is a boy you may be able to keep him and Daddy in one cage, and the girls in another.

Thank you both for replying. This is him/her? (I've yet to determine the sex)

That is one adorable baby piggy! Agree with the others, girls and boys need to stay separated. Weigh the baby daily to ensure he/she's going in the right direction. If baby is a male, he'll need to be separated from mum and auntie at 3 weeks of age.
