Hi all,
I have read guinea pigs should avoid alfalfa nuggets after they turn 1 year old (roughly). Mine just has and he's been having Selective Science food recently. As these nuggets are alfalfa based, can anyone recommend a brand and a way to make the transition as stress-free as possible?
Thanks in advance!

Hi, there are many different ones out there, science selective do a grain free version that is Timothy hay based. That’s a good pellet.
Which ever one you choose, try and do the change gradually across a week, substituting more of the old pellet each day with the new.

I agree with having a look at the comparison chart linked above. It's great for finding a food that suits your pigs and your budget :)

Thanks for your replies. What should I be looking for in the chart? I had taken a look at it before posting this thread, but besides the main ingredient column, what are "good values" to look for? Budget-wise I'm relatively concerned. I'm not rich at all but I like good food for the family, pig included. :D
Also, should I decide to buy timothy hay based nuggets, shall I also stick to timothy hay as the main food? Or maybe mix things up a little and go for Meadow?
Once again thanks all for your help!

Welcome to the forum.

I use the Selective grain free pellets but as they don’t make up a large amount of the diet it’s not too expensive.

I give mine a wide variety of different hays to hep give them an interesting diet, especially as hay is 80% of their diet.
I haven’t found a hay they don’t like but they seem to love Timothy hay and mountain hay best.
Please let’s see pics of your piggies

Isnt this little to no vit c though?

I've found a lot of pellets are simply junk food for pigs that don't get veggies sold by the pet stores to make max profit for a product containing processed wheat, soya and sugar with some synthetic vitamins thrown in. I've seen lots of information on pellet free or partial pellet diets due to wheat causing bloating and obesity whether this is true or not is still up for discussion. I currently feed science select but I limit the amount to 10g daily. I need to change over but I'm still searching for a good pellet.

What ever you decide stay away if possible from pic n mix food, the muesli type due to selective feeding. Although ultimately the choice is yours depending on your research, budget etc

Vitamin C should come from the veggies because the ones in pellets deteriate due to oxidation, heat, light, pasteurization etc. The higher the percentage in pellets the better although there is a particular rescue who simply feeds liquid vitamin C daily to piggies alongside veg etc. Putting Vitamin C in the water is not a good idea.

Everything you said is true .Only one thing. Vit d for indoor pigs like mine. Thats why i feed nuggets. But i have thought about ditching them and giving a supplement. Also one of my pigs is picky with red bell peppers and green. And feeding kale or spinach has to be limited
