Any help would be appreciated.

After taking mia to the vets again today after being on baytril for 2 weeks and not kicking the croaky chest and struggling to breathe =( .a recommended guinea vet, i was given septrin (bactrim) 0.6 ml twice daily, i was advised to also carry on with the baytril 0.2ml twice daily as well, i just want to ensure that taking both will not harm my guinea and that it is safe and effective?

Thanks

Poor girl. I am not knowlegable enough to comment on the dosages but they seem like small normal amounts. I'm sure some of the more knowlegable members can help when they come along. I hope she is better soon. It sounds like they are giving her something stronger to help get rid of the croaky chest as the baytril has not helped.

Both the baytril and spetrin dosages are conservative for a guinea pig.

Giving both together as a course of treatment is not harmful - however "tactically" I used to give one 3 hours after the other, (and both were given twice a day).

Depending upon the weight of your piggie (Assuming they are 1kg) they can have 0.4ml of 2.5% baytril twice a day and up to 0.7ml peadiatric banana septrin twice a day....a few vets would go higher based upon the observation that a guinea pig's metabolic rate is a lot higher that rabbits abd more akin to rats.

Given the persistent croaky chest I would suggest an Xray for fluid around the heart/in the lungs is done pronto and a diuretic (frusemaide) and, if necessary, heart meds (fortekor and/or pimobenden) are given

Print out the link below including the Xrays and take to your vets....or ANOTher vets who might be more cavy savvy..

I see you're in Doncaster - that whole area is "sparse" for cavy savvy vets. If you can get to Holly House in Leeds to see James Brookes that would be best...as you'll get a much better "reception"

Sorry but, given the lack of/negative reports on vets in your area from members, I can't "yet" point you to a cavy savvy vet in your local area with any confidence.

Diuretic is your next step....

dont forget you need syringe biolapis as well to keep her appetite on good level. If She stop eating need have recovery mix ready too.Cage needed to be warm and dry.

One of my older girls was prescribed Marbocyl and Bisolvon for a really bad chest as the Baytril hadn't helped after the course was complete, in fact she had become worse so we rushed her to an Exotic Vet driving at 999 speed :(
She was back to herself within two weeks on this treatment rolleyes
Metacam (Loxicom) is an anti inflammatory medication, effective with URI's too - maybe worth speaking to an Exotic Vet if possible :)
Sending healing vibes for your little one x>>
