Can anyone help with toilet training advice ?
I have had my guinea pigs just over 3 weeks now, they have a litter tray which they use quite a lot but also wee all along the back of the hutch too. I keep cleaning it up and have tried moving the litter tray. Has anyone managed to toilet train there guinea pig or should I just be happy that 60 % is in the litter tray. I had a hamster toilet trained when I was a kid and that was much easier. My piggies are coming inside soon and realy want them trained so they don't stink my house out, lol! What do you use in the litter tray. I have just been using the shavings, but wondered if I should use something else ?

Mine wee wherever there is hay. I use newspaper and hay in the litter tray, but they will go still go outside of it too, especially if hay has spilt out. It's difficult to get them to go in the litter tray 100% of the time.

I too would like to toilet train my piggies as they're coming inside over the winter... However, i'm a little worried that I have left it too long to do so. All advice appreciated xx

I read somewhere maybe on this forum that if you put the litter tray under the water bottle it helps :{
I have not tried this but my piggies have litter trays and separate hay racks and rarely wee in the hay - as soon as I put the clean 'toilet' in, they jump onto it and do their wee etc. :))
Corners are better as they do tend to poop there so just keep an eye on their chosen areas.

Almost all pigs will poo and pee wherever they're stood, but on occasion you'll get the odd one that'll make piles and damp patches in a corner or side they feel comfortable going in.

I've never attempted to litter train a pig because I don't see the point, personally. I know where all my pigs (12 of them) prefer to pee, which are all different, and every time I clean their hutches out, I head straight for those places first.

I've noticed that sows will naturally go in the same place more than boars.

You'll have to have a lot of patience and to be honest, they're the ones who'll teach you how to litter train them as all pigs are different.

I actually have a "potty trained" guinea pig. She comes out for cuddles and lap time and only has a wee when she is popped back in the carry-box. We say "have wee-wee" and she does, then she comes back out for cuddles again. I think she loves cuddles and then realised when she did a wee unexpectedly the cuddles were stopped! :))

I know that this different to trying to get piggies to go in a particular area of their cage but it might be a start by using the piggy-loo when they are out for lap-time.

Oh that is so cute!

Mine pee and poop everywhere in their cages. EVERYWHERE!

I guess the one plus is that they hate peeing and pooing on me so they nip at my clothes and whine for me to put them back if I'm on my own.

If however, OH is around, they will literally jump/ scurry/ run, whatever is the quickest way possible to get onto him and then do their business. They LOVE peeing and pooping on him xx>>> We both refer to him as the Piggy Litter-tray!

And when they're not out, they fling poops at him when he's trying to sleep, so he should be used to it haha
