Hi,

I was wondering if anyone had a good method of keeping water bottles clean and green-free? My problem is that however well I clean the bottle (daily), by the next day there is green/brown staining again. I think that there must be dirt inside the drinking bit that I'm struggling to get to. I'm off to buy new bottles today and would love ideas for how to keep them cleaner for longer.

Hiya. Are your bottles/piggies outside? My late piggy used to be a bit dirty with his water bottle & would somehow spit bits of food back up inside it so the water could often look dirty. But my 3 girly piggies don’t do that. I’ve only had inside piggies. I’ve used bottle brushes & hot water before & like you, sometimes I had to buy replacement. Sorry if that’s not much help. Let me know how you get on x

Thanks for the reply. They are indoors.

Is the sun shining on them creating algae? We tend to replace plastic bottles every 6 months

The bottle is for sure contaminated... nothing dangerous, but you have two options:
1- change the bottle
2- buy a disinfectant product, for example this one:
(Multi-Purpose Highly sanitising disinfecting liquid, effective against bacteria, fungi and viruses,...)

I see I cannot upload any picture..., the product is sold by Amazon.uk and it is called
Chicco Disinfectant 1 Litre Bottle

of course any similar products work as well (Chicco is dispatched from Italy and it is not cheap if you have to pay also the delivery...)

If this is the case, you could try a bottle cover. I have them for one of my piggies cages - especially in the winter when the sun is low, the bottles catch the sun quite a lot. There are different sizes/colours available.

Once every month I sterilise my bottles. I buy the wilkos denture cleaner tablets which are 50p a tube and make up the mixture in the sink. I also have a bottle brush that I got off Amazon. It has a small spout brush on the other side which helps to clean the sippy bit. I'll see if I can find a photo of one so you can see what I mean

I have one of those mini bottle brushes and it’s rubbish for the spout. I use cotton buds from both the drinking end and the cap end of the spout and it works really well

I must be lucky cos the only place the dirt sticks on mine is where the metal joins the plastic and the mini brushes get to it well
