Hey, We just went to feed our male guinea pig..he has gone lame and cold feeling. He ate his diner last night and breakfast this morning.
He is now lying on his side as he keeps falling this way. What could this be down too? can ayone help? He was fine yesterday running around with his brother and eating and dringking

We have contacted a local vet but they were reluctant to see him.
 
Please try another vet, he needs to see one tonight. Has he been out in the sun at all today?
 
I'm really sorry, it could be end stage heart failure, it does sound like he may be shutting down. The kindest thing you can do in that situation is to help him to the bridge if the vet feels there is nothing they can do. The vet should let you stay with him.
 
the only vet that will see him is charging £130 for an initial consultation fee :( i dont have that money spare at the moment and I'm not on any benefits to get money off the fee. i've been made feel as though I'm a heartless bitch. i want what is best for him.
 
he just said it was that fee as we arent registered there and the money would be needed by the end of the week middle of next...I had an unexpected bill come up and thats why i havent got money until the end of the month.
 
Oh my word that's expensive, and cruel on the vets part to put that added stress on you...I know they have to earn money but £130 is taking the mic I think.
Is there another vet you can call? Have you told that vet you simply can not find that money could the help you cheaper or a payment plan (I'm just thinking of ways that might help you )

thanks...there are only two vets local to me out of hours and one of them is a 30 min drive...thanks for your sugestions.
i'm going to try and find someone else. I was open and upfront about the mney situation from the start and i obviously want what is best for my pet, but he made me feel as though i dont care for querying the cost.
 
Hi, Sorry your little one is sick I know it sucks. Have you tried vet care direct, They are the RSPCA out of hours vets they are meant to be low cost. I have my fingers crossed and your little ones.

There is also (copied and pasted this straight from the RSPCA website)

Vetfone is a 24-hour service, which works like an NHS Direct for pets, and anyone can call. It is staffed exclusively by UK-qualified veterinary nurses with years of experience.


You can pay upfront or have the call charged to your bill, and the cost is typically less than an initial consultation.


Call using the following numbers and a donation will be made to the RSPCA.

  • Call 01728 727 673 to pay a fixed fee of £12.50.
  • This is fixed regardless of when the call is made and its duration. We will receive £1 for each call made to this number.
  • Or call 09065 00 55 00 to pay £1.53 per minute.
    An average call is about £6-10, and we will receive a proportion.

Hey, sorry for a total lack of contact...we sadly lost our beautiful wee Alfie just before midnight on Thursday evening :( we have had a lot of work to do with his brother oscar since the loss of alfie.
