My guinea pig is dying. The vet told me to put him in his house and leave him to go peacefully but I've read a lot about people saying you should cuddle with them! What should I do? What's best for him?

Oh dear, I'm so sorry to hear that.

Does he live with any other piggies? Can you give us more details on his illness/symptoms and the vet's diagnosis?

I personally always think it must be more comforting for a dying piggy (or any other creature) to be with someone they love during their last moments and to be calmed down and cuddled.

I recently found he had an abscess and he has been on antibiotic. But today I went to give him his medicine and he was limp and heavy eyed. I picked him up and he just lay on me whereas he's usually full of beans. Thanks for the advice! I thought it seemed sad to just leave him on his own

I am sorry to hear you are going through this. Has your piggy seen a vet today? I would say this is an emergency and he needs to be seen as soon as possible.

I called the vet and they said I can take him in tonight if he survives. They might put him down. His symptoms are:
Droopy eyes
Discharge from his eyes
Puffy hair
And also he's acting sort of drunk like stumbling and struggling to walk and he's cold

He needs the vet now. If it is his time it will be kinder to have him pts as it will not be a quick death. They may even be able to help him.

Can you or is there anyone in your house who can take him now? It really is an emergency, nature can be very cruel and soemtimes PTS is the last act of love we can do for our little ones. It is kinder to help them on their way than to let them struggle. I know this is really painful, but would really advise you getting to the vets ASAP.

Thanks for all the help and support! I'll get him to the vet as soon as possible! I just hate seeing him like this

I totally agree. There might still be something that can be done to help him, but if not, it is kinder to PTS your piggy rather than leaving him in what could potentially be a long and painful death.

Big hugs & I hope there is still something that can be done!

That's good to hear. I am sorry.

Just posting to say that wee George never made it to the vet. A couple of hours ago he passed away in his sleep whilst cuddled up on my lap. My dog (who loved him) just wanted to keep licking him
