I came back from picking up some more nuggets for the guineas about an hour ago and found marmite (the black&brown piggie) collapsed on his side. He was still breathing but couldn't move. He could move his back legs but not his front and he was just lay there squeaking. My dad and sister have rushed him to the vets while I stay here with Crumpet to make sure he doesn't get lonely. There is no evidence of a fight or anything as I was only gone for an hour and the hay was in pretty much the same position as when I left (except for a gap where they get to their food and water) and there is no blood/ fur in the cage. Marmite was a lot skinnier and than Crumpet but did eat as we saw him doing so. I don't know what happened so could anyone help? I'm not allowed to go to the vets because I'm an emotional wreck right now xx

How old is he? Had you noticed any abnormal behaviour beforehand? Has the vet given you a diagnosis? Is it possible he was having a seizure?

I am really sorry, please let us know what the vet has said.

what a bad news!!! hope the vet will be able to do something...
anyway... is a piggie from a petsore? maybe it is a coincidence, or maybe not...

Yes, he's a piggie from a pet store. The vet said he had worms really bad and that it had shut down half of his body and paralysed him. We've only had him a week, and for him to be that bad shows that he had it while he was at pets@home too. Having to have both of the Guineas treated now as they were both in the same enclosure in the store. However, pets@home were great about it and are doing all treatment and medication for free. Just hope he pulls through.

This is him. He can't stand up so I say having to be supported by a towel. We have to feed him through a syringe and keep him separated from other piggies. Don't recommend buying from a pet store as this is what happens x

They often fully recover from sisures you need to keep him upright as he is in the photo, quiet and away from anything that may cause him to get frightened,

NB do not let him lie down if at all possible

It wasn't a seizure, he has worms and the one side of his body has shut down. This caused him to fall over and the wriggling was him trying to get up xx

I hope you can have the same luck I saw at the rescue where I adopted my piggies. There was a paralised rabbit, of course resident. It was a different disease, but the daughter of the lady running the rescue tried on him some physiotherapy (she is a physiotherapist): now the rabbit walks again... And that rabbit had a damage at his nerves.
Another good story: the little kitten saved by a friend of mine had troubles at his gut because he never had milk from his mum and one day he was paralised. Now he is a big healthy cat!
I really hope even yours is going to be a happy ending story. Your piggie is young and can recover...
hugs! and finger crossed!

rip little marmite :( you lived a shirt but great life. I loved the times when you would come and sit on my knee and squeak for pepper. And when you ran around popcorning. You will never be replaced little one. You died in my arms and will forever remain in my heart Sleep tight little one ♥️

so sorry for your loss... for sure the worms affected the brain... and maybe affected all the piggies on sale at the shop, those ones who arrive from a breeder who should have been reported.
The fact that the shop pays the vet (and it is not the first time) for not risking a scandal does not mean a lot... I would not be polite for sure...
About you, think about the fact that you have done all your best for Marmite... and that there is Crumpet now to need your cuddles (and another friend, from a rescue this time or from a serious breeder)
hugs to you!

I'm so sorry for your loss. It is scary how quickly that set in. I hope little Crumpet responds to treatment ok.

We went to a rescue today to begin to find the perfect piggie friend for Crumpet. We think we have found the one but we're going to get involved in a "dating" session to find out properly. Pets at home offered us a new piggie but we turned it down as they were all the same piggies that were in there when we got them both. Crumpet is doing just fine. He's showing no signs of the illness and has been treated just in case. pets@home say they are going to look into the breeders they are sourcing from but we can never know if they will really do it xx

Wish pets at home didnt sell animals.

Sorry for your sad loss. Hope Crumpet finds a lovely new friend.

We went for a piggie dating session today with crumpet and guess what... we've found him a friend. I'm still not over marmite and won't be for a long time, but for crumpets sake, we needed to get another piggie. The piggie we've found is called Rocket and they get on like a house on fire. We're going to pick him up next week because he just needs to have a few vet checks to make sure he is fine (even though he's already been checked). I'm really happy with the choice we've made because Rocket is such a little character. He's a lot different than Marmite but I'm glad because I don't want to feel like I'm replacing him. Ideally, we wanted to wait to get another piggie, until I was over Marmite a bit as I'm still rather emotional, but, after a lot of research, we learnt that the quicker we can find him a friend the better.

I miss Marmite so much and he will forever hold a special place in my heart. I miss his friendliness and how he would squeak for food and when he would crawl on my knee during floor time. Rip little man

Oh that is !ovely for Crumpet. Cant wait to see pics of the two of them.

Marmite sounds like he was a special piggie x

right choice! and it is important also for you... Rocket will help you to overcome the death of poor Marmite.:luv:

Rocket was taken to the home after his pal passed away and he began to get ill. The home could give him the care he needed while his old family couldn't. We have given Rocket a new pal and now Crumpet has one too. Getting a piggie from a home feels a lot more rewarding than getting a piggie from a pet store. After experiencing all I did with marmite, it feels nice to be making a piggie happy and giving him a second chance in life. Also, rocket is a short haired piggie with two ginger patches over his eyes. He is called rocket as it is his favourite veg.

Thank you all for your lovely messages about Marmite. I honestly can't express how much you have all helped. I love this little community and I'm glad that you are all here to help me on my piggie journey x
