I've got a 1 year old guinea pig and his hair is going very quickly he has gone quite bald and he is biting fur off him he is also scratching and biting himself I have given him a spray for external parasites it stop the scratching for a couple of days but now he's starting again could this be due to stress as he has not got a friend.

Welcome to the forum. It sounds like mange mites but only a vet can diagnose. Most shop bought products are not strong enough to deal with them and he will need something from the vets. In the UK this is usually Ivermectin or Selamectin. Mange mites can be very uncomfortable and make them scratch and bite at themselves. The other possibility is fungal and this also makes the hair come out but the skin is usually inflamed and the hair comes out easily when pulled gently. This would also require vet treatment.

Stress can make them susceptible to mange mites or fungal is it lowers the immune system but I cannot say for certain. You would need to make sure he is completely clear of whatever is going on before introducing a friend.

N B best to always see a vet

@gizzy - on this forum we strongly recommend to see a vet promptly and not to treat on spec unless you know exactly what you are doing, which I know you can do, but it is not advisable for any new owner.
Please be aware that we are public space and as such legally not allowed to diagnose and treat online without a hands-on diagnosis. We also have members from a lot more countries than the UK. Thank you!

If you treat straight away, any vet will not be able to treat immediately and you have to wait until your weaker product has worn off. If it turns out to be something else, you are wiping the crime scene and making any diagnosis a lot more tricky. The vet will not pleased!

That's what I said! :tu:
In an ideal world see a vet! It's just that the world is not always ideal :hmm:

We can see that but if you read @Wiebke post it's not just not being an ideal world, it's treating on spec being detrimental to the piggies health as it can interfere with the diagnosis at the vets and can delay real, necessary treatment. In my honest opinion I would rather leave the guinea pig scratching for 12-24 hours while waiting on the vet appointment rather than risk that
