mollymillymaisy

hi, my name is alex and i am 16

please take the time to read this

At the age of 7 my parents introduced 3 pigs into our family from my mums friend who is a rspca guinea pig lady who takes in sick pigs hoping for me to become more responsible there names were minnie and speedy and porcsha they died due to an infection.

i now have 3 funny pigs (mission impossible molly ) we call her this because she once managed to climb 2 flights of stairs and hide under my brothers bed on the 2nd floor. she weighs 850g -900g and is in good health. Fat Maisy our new baby who came in september she weighs 850g -920g but we r trying to get her to lose some weight. And milly she is the same age as molly but weighs only 600g and lately she has scratched her eye but that is under control. her weight is worrying me we have been feeding her separately so that we no she is eating she is also eating a lot of brown bread which i hope will make her put on a bit of weight .

please if u have any advice i would be very grateful.

x

Fat Maisy isn't all that fat. Three of my four sows weigh over 1000g and even then it's not particularly huge. Some weigh up to 1200g or more. You don't mention how old the piggies are - they are not fully grown until about 10 months to a year. Some continue to put on weight even after this.

Don't feed your piggy brown bread - it has too much carbohydrate which is very hard for them to digest and could cause bloat. If you feed a balanced diet of hay (most important, should be unlimited), vegetables (a good variety) and high quality pellets she should put on weight naturally.

I completely agree with DSL, its very rare that a guinea pig needs to lose weight. 3 of mine weigh over 1000 and two of them are not fully grown, aslong as they get exercise and a good diet no need to lose weight O0

thanks for the reply's

Well we have had molly and milly 4 1/2 years and maisy a couple of mounths and she will go back to feeding as normal.

thankyou very much.

feed her plenty of grass, hay, pellets fruit and veggies, make sure she gets water, exercise and she should put on weight. maybe later she will have a growth spurt. yes we have had guinea pigs petal and rosie who needed to lose weight as they were close to 1500-1800 grams. but petal lived to 5 years and 3 months and rosie 6 years 21 days. if milly is eating, drinking and pooping i would just continue to watch her, like i said she may have a growth spurt depending on her age. good luck with your girls. hugs and cuddles to you and your girls from oz. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: okay to your latest post as piggies grow older they do lose weight, i would suggest a vet trip to have her checked out even if it is just to ease your mind. wishing you and your girls luck.

My pigs are quite young (oldest pair being 10 months) and they weigh 1300g, my girls who are 9 months weigh 1200g-1100g and I have 2 younger boars being 4 and 5 months with the oldest one weighing around 900g he is huge.

Your pigs sound like they are a good healthy weight. :)

Your pigs sound ok. Don't put them on a diet as they can get ill. Obviously guineas aren't meant to be overweight, but they are meant to have weight on them. As long as they have a healthy, balanced, pig suitable diet plus some exercise in the run every day they should be fine.

I've only weighed Garry recently - he's the only one who I can get to sit on the scales... ::) He's 6 months old tomorrow and weighs 775g...sounds light to me compared with other similar aged pigs I've read about on this forum, but both Garry and Minty were on the small side when I got them. He's doing everything a piggy should and to me he now seems huge! I guess each pig is different in weight and build, just like we are.

They are and don't worry about it. Many piggies seem to reach a bit of a "plateau" at 6 months and then will have another big growth spurt again. He may end up twice that!
