How often do you feed GP'S fresh fruit and veg? Do they need it everyday? They have always got their dried food, hay with dried grass mixed in,just not sure on the veg and fruit side. :-\

I feed mine once a day with fresh veg but they do graze most daze too on grass in thier runs... they have a good handfull of chopped veggies a day each

Thanks for that. They do get veg and fruit each day,i was a bit worried i was feeding them to much if that is possible, for small anials they do eat alot lol :D

SOrry but can i ask is it ok to feed piggies veg once a day if they are indoors and have a supply of pellets and hay? The previous owner of mine fed hers veg twice a day but it is costing me a fortune! I am wanting to faze out two meals of veg and give them a little treat each of veg instead... Is this ok to do? I managed to introduce veg to my bunnies diet so i can wean piggies off a full veg meal in the evening but wanted to know if this is ok for indoor piggies who dont have grass as much...

They need a variety each day to stay healthy, not just as a treat. It doesn't need to be fed twice a day, though.

Sorry ;D i meant give them one good meal of veg a day and a treat of something fruity or veggy in the evening! They already get a good variety but twice a day instead of the once...
Thanks for that though... I will start fazing out the evening veggie meal over the next few weeks and give them extra hay and a small veg treat in the evening instead...

Yep once a day is fine. Mine only get fed in the evening but they do get some veggie treats at other times too.

Is it better to feed veg in the morning or evening? Or does it not matter? Sorry if i am hijacking the post :embarassed:

Mine only get fruit/veg once a day (occasionally I might split it into morning and evening but its always the same amount) - I couldn't afford to feed them 2 large portions a day.

I tend to give mine it in the evening at the same time as me and my cats are all having our dinners - so that we all eat together! ;D

I don't think it really makes a difference. Although I think it is good for them to have a routine (i.e. getting fed at the same time everyday etc...) Mine definitely know when it is coming up to their dinner time.

Mine make a real noise if I am late feeding them in the morning. If I try and have a bit of a lie in on the weekend, they never let me hear the end of it! ;D

Mine get veg twice a day often with half a grape or half a cherry each hidden in the bottom of their bowls. They also have a bowl of dried mix topped up twice a day....hope I'm not overfeeding them!!

I feel awful - I don't put my veggies in a bowl just distribute them round on the floor of the cage. I give it to them twice a day, but each time I remove anything that is left from before, so they are always fresh. But I just do the dry food once a day, in the mornings. I clean their cages out fully on alternate days, and on the day in between I give them extra hay.

Mine get a bowl of dried stuff (1/2 cup) in the mornings and also a bowl of veggies and fruit. They have unlimited supply of hay.
That normally lasts them til around dinner time, then I give them a handfull of grass, just scattered on the floor and that lasts them over night with the hay.

I prefer to feed them in the mornings because by lunchtime the noise is so great when you go outside it's not bearable. And because I get up early I have the time for that.

Sueg - don't feel awful for scattering the food, you are encouraging normal forraging behaviour, like they do in the wild. The bowls are mostly there to keep everything in one place.....that never works anyway because they grab and run with the stuff in their mouths everywhere. So even with the bowls we have to go through the hutch to clean the old stuff out.

Hi there.Guineas need vitamin c (which is in greens and fruit and veges) every day because they cant make it in there little bodies. If they dont get vitamin c they can get vitc deficiency and scurvy which is painful and hard to treat.hope that helped :)

Don't feel awful. I gave up on using a bowl a long time ago as they just drag everything on the floor anyway ;D

Well Squeeky kept on wheeking at me a minute ago so i gave them each a tiny carrrot... Bigbum ate his super fast and then followed Squeeky around trying to nick hers... SO i went and got him anothe to keep him quite and Squeeky left hers and went to investigate his as his was bigger than her half eaten one! So i ended up giving them all another small carrot...

Fickle animals... ::)
