Hi again. It looks like my 4 year old boar as mites. I noticed a bald patch on him yesterday and I've ordered Ivermectin from vetuk. Today the bald patc is much bigger. Does it happen this quickly? I'm just worried it could be something else? One of my other boars in a different cage has a small bald patch which hasn't grown. I'm assuming they've caught mites from the hay and am going to treat them all. I seem to be having a run of things going wrong with nearly all of them just now and am so worried :-(

oh and what else can I do whilst waiting for the Ivermectin? It doesn't look sore, but is there something I can put on the bald area to help?

ow it could be vit c deficiency if it is happening that fast.you can bathe them in a medical wash to relieve itching also.

Try half a chewable vitamin c tablet for a week or so. I always do this when my piggies are ill or run down.

Thanks ladies! Well we've just come back from the vet who did a scraping. He found a mite under the microscope. So he's having ivermectin (which I should receive from vetuk today as I'd already ordered it) and bio lapis for 10 days. I just really worry about him as he's 5 and I love him so very much.

I need to call Pets at Home now to see if they do a guinea pig Acaricidal environment agent to clean out the hutches and I'll need to treat all 4 of them with ivermectin. Nasty, nasty mites :-(

Sorry silly question! But how do you give this to them? Crush it in their food or in their water?

The Ivermectin? They come in little pipettes and you just squeeze the drops onto and around their neck area and maybe a little way down the spine.

I just used to snap one in half and my piggie used to take it of me and eat it herself. You could crumble it and sprinkle it on to wet veg like cucumber or tomato. You could also sprinkle it over food. It's best not to give it in water and it lowers the strength of the vit c. Also if it was in a water bottle you wouldn't know how much of it your piggie was actually getting and also it could put them of using the water bottle. Hope this helps :)
