Help

My guinea pig is addicted to carrots
if we don't give him one in the morning
he starts to bite his cage.

what can i do:...

try him with other veggies! dont give him carrots for a while, then maybe give him carrots once a week, they need variety!

I had a very similar problem, one of my pigs wouldn't eat anything but them for a while, and due to the calcium in the carrots, his urine was a milky white colour, and left behind a white residue.

I was worried that he might get bladder or kidney stones, so I had to wean him off them very gradually.

At the minute, there is a note on his hutch to remind my OH not to give him any carrots at all, but we've made his diet a lot more varied in the hope he might be amused by the different colours and textures and tastes and forget about his carrots!

wow thanks

i will try to get him to eat other veg

it was because if yo didn't give him one he would start biting his cage

I try to change the kinds of veg that I give mine every day so that each time they go to the bowl they don't know what to expect - it's nice to give them a wee surprise! It might not seem like much to us but it will to them.

cool thanks

but i know that there is some veg you can't give them
what veg is that

don't give them potatoes, onions, chillies, garlic, tomatoes (unless very small quantities and pips and green bit removed), you shouldn't feed things like lettuce, cucumber, celery, fruit & carrot everyday either just couple of times a week!

It's best to avoid citrusy fruits as well, although I have heard a little tiny bit of orange very occasionally is ok.

Just as well too, Dexter was sitting in my jumper earlier, and was stealing bits of orange right out of my hand!
He never eats food he's meant to eat out of my hand though. I think he's just trying to be a little rebel!

Hiya,

My piggie wouldnt have anything but romaine lettuce a while back and began chewing her house when she wasnt allowed it.

I just stuck it out and took her out her cage for a cuddle with a different veggies. she soon started to like it and now is allowed her lettuce on occasions. but she does now have a door twice the size into her piggloo than when i brought it!

x

mine get a variety of different veg every day (like a mini salad!) and then i save their fave things - lettuce and cabbage for treat time then they will actually come near me!
