Hey all.My guinea pig Biscuit has something wrong with one of his back feet.He had something come of it the other day it look like a piece of poop but I am not sure.Now it is swollen and red and peeling.And the swelling is going up into his ankle.Any Ideas what this is.
Please help me This is the first time like this has happened and I am kinda scared8....
 
Poor Biscuit. Maybe he had a cut and some debris got it? If the inflammation area is increasing then he may have an infection that requires antibiotics. The only thing I could suggest until you get to a vets is bathing the area with a little salt water. Alcester Pigs hasd the most knowledge on these matter but dont know if she is about at the moment. You could try sending her a PM and I'm sure she will respond when she can. Please let me know how you get on. If it is a cut that has become infected then best to get him seen by a vet whenever you can to stop the infection spreading any further. Sending healing wheeks for Biscuit...
 
His other back foot now has a little piece of loose skin on it to but it ain't red or swollen.
 
He can still get it on his back heel, can you bring him to a vet soon ?
 
Just a thought, but have you changed the bedding in biscuits cage? It could be an allergic reaction to something.
 
just by what you are saying I'm not sure that it would be bumble foot,
bumblefoot seems to be more common in the front feet.
And i dont think it would travel to the ankle,maybe check out guinea lynx and see if you can find anything but it sounds serious to me so i would get him to a vet xxxxxxxxxx
 
I am not sure I am going to have to talk to my parents in a few mins.I have look at pics of the bumble foot and the dark part(the scab) is gone because I am guessing that is what came of.
I don't know what to do I don't have any money and to take him to the vet is going to be 75dollars.I am really scared.
He is walking on it.Should I put him in a cage my himself or leave him with Apatche.

i would keep them together,if it is transerfable they have already been together and i find with any illness that its best to avoid separtion when possible,
as soon as the vet checks it out then you could decided what to do,isnt $75 alot of money even for over there?
its really important that he gets seen in case it is serious,maybe the vet may hold an account for you temporarily?

It is still swollen and red and now his other back foot is starting to get red.I am scared that I am going to have to put him to sleep because I don't have the money to get him Alot of treatment.I am soooo scared and upset.
 
I'm so sorry. I know how upset you must be. Ive never came across this with my piggies so dont have any advice to pass on. The guinea lynx health pages have information and pictures of bumblefoot.Thinking of you and Biscuit..
 
A red foot can indicate an infection, bumblefoot or even heart problems. However, from your description, it is probably bumblefoot. It can spread into the leg. Most of the cases I have seen involve the front feet.
Treatment/cure can be difficult. To keep the skin softened put some skin cream onto the foot and cover it with Micropore tape. Internal treatment can consist of an antifungal drug.
My oldest boar died two days ago, he had severe bumblefoot, it had caused degenerative joint disease. His heel bone/ankle joint had been destroyed. I must emphasise that this was an extreme case, I mention it just to show what can happen. I had been treating him for the condition.
Pictures of your pig would help to get a better idea of his condition.

hello. any update on biscuit? i'm sure if you explained the situation to the vet before treatment you could maybe work out a payment plan? let me know how you get on. from me experience, the quicker you can get your pig to the vet, the better and cheaper you cure the pig. x
 
Robin was a grey Agouti. He was given to me 4 years ago by a friend who rescued him from a large pet shop in Leicester. He had, like so many pigs who are close to the end, a final fling on Sunday when he ate and ate and put on about 2 ounces, 60gm, however, overnight he lost double that amount and he gently faded away during the course of Monday morning, a good death.
All of which has reminded me that I must let my friend know that Robin has died.

I took Biscuit and Apatche to the vet and I let the vet keep them she has a freind at a collage where they teach how to be vets.So they are going there and are going to get a good home and they have all their stuff with.

I am sorry for your loss - you bear it, but every time your life seems poorer and there is another hole in your heart.
 
14 have died so far this year, still 2 months left......!
I have gained 2, so now have 16, the lowest number for many years.
