My pig has a respiratory problem. We took her to the vet yesterday and he gave her a needle and some antibiotics for us to take. We gave her the correct amount of antibiotic the smorning but she is getting progressively worse. She wont eat, wont move, wont do anything. We are trying to feed her but nothing is working. Please help before she dies on me! :0 8...

Oh dear. I don't have any help for you but bumping up for someone with knowledge to see. Sending healing vibes to your piggie. x

I'm afraid I don't know much about URI's but I would have thought your piggy should be feeling a little better after the antibiotic treatment. If she appears to be getting worse, I would take her back to the vet asap xx

I'm new here but have a piggy who's not eating so we're having to syringe feed her at the moment. People have advised me to mash up some of her pellets with some warm water to syringe feed her, have you tried doing this? Also blended some veg down to syringe to her as well and giving her metatone to try to stimulate her appetite.

I'm sure there'll be more knowledgeable people along soon, I just thought I'd tell you what we're trying with ours at the moment

Sorry to hear about your pig. It's very important that you do get some food into them and the warm water to mash up pellets is good. Or get some critical care (now) and start that - your vet will have it. But the pellets will do just as well mashed up and syringe fed to your piggy.

What antibiotics have you been given and how much are you giving? It should be twice daily for a start. If they wont take it you can mix it with a drop or two of straight ribena and that will make it taste a bit better.

I hope they get better. xx

Welcome to the forum seb, I am sorry your guinea is so ill.

How is she today? How old is she, what antibiotic is she on and what injection was she given?

My first thought is she needs a diuretic, if there's fluid in the lungs a one-off dose of diuretic will help to clear this fluid and give the antibiotics a chance to kick in.

Syringe-feeding a piggie with a respiratory problem can be very difficult, literally one small mouthful at a time, but it needs to be given little and often as guineas need the regular feeds to keep their digestion running well, and they'll get their strength to fight illness from a good food intake.

I agree with laura, do what you can but if theres no improvment in the next 24 hours or if your piggies health gets worse go to the vet again.

thank you to everyone who posted to try and help. We did mash up some food and syringe feed her. Unfortunately my pig passed away the day after we took her to the vet. 8... I appreciate all the help there has been. I miss her terribly. Now there is no one to hold who just makes everything feel a little better. R.I.P miss pig xx :0
