Help!

Well we had our suspicions yesterday and today they were confirmed.... Steven ( My OH ) is allergic to the guinea pigs! Although we've only had them for a couple of days we wouldn't dream of getting rid of them so really I was wondering if anyone knew of anything he could take/do to help with the situation... I dont think he fancies the idea of breaking out in hives every time he picks them up!
 
Can't he get something from a doctor? I've no idea what I'm talking about really, but I know when people have bene allergic to cats, dogs, etc they were told to go the doctor (haha, I nearly typed vet then ::)) and they would give them something.
 
Piriton tablets, my mum is allergic to cats and takes them, also they could be housed out side as then you OH wouldnt need to go near them.
 
I was allergic to mine, but I never got hives. I just got red spots where they touched my skin. I would just wash over it with soapy waster and it would immediately stop itching and go away. I had the bad alleriges of sneezing and stuffiness and coughing when I got around mine. Sadly, I had to give them up, but they have been gone since then. Maybe there is something that can be done to help on your situation. Good luck! ;)
 
Well the only reaction he has is if they come into contact with his skin he comes out with hives, he doesnt have any other symptoms so I think they'll be ok to stay in the house. I'm hoping that if he just wears long sleeves that will help, it does just seem to be when they come in direct contact with his skin, although weirdly enough not his hands!

I think we'll keep an eye on the situation and if it gets worse we'll take a trip to the docs

And here was me thinking his hayfever was the one that was going to cause problems!
 
Sorry to hear this but don't rehome them straight away (which you aren't doing). I have known of a few people who have lived with animals even though they have allergies. I hope you find a way to keep the guineas and keep Steven free from reactions, by the sounds of it the allergies aren't that bad. In time it has been known for allergies to disappear. :)
 
I am allergic to most animals (plus alot of other things) and have to take anti - histamine tablet every day. Does not stop the itch lumps but all the other symtoms. Washing the affected area usually stops thr itch.
 
I am terribly allergic to cats and (i know this will sound like i'm a bit crazy but) when i moved in with my fella before we got out house together he had 2 cats and i took an anti-histamine every day and gradually after a while i got more and more 'used to' the kitties and stopped taking them and was fine ;D

although still allergic if i went round to other peoples houses with different cats?! ? sorry this may just be me, but he may develop a sort of immunity to them?... hopefully!

I'm allergic to cats too,years ago i used to have injections for hayfever and they worked wonders if i was near a cat,no reaction to it at all,but they stopped giving them because theyre unsafe for women ::) ::) duh..
now its OD'ing on antihistamine tabs

you could always ask the doc if they still do the injections as theyre safe for men,and theyre amazing when they work too
 
Oh dear, that's a pity, mmmm i'd try the anti histamines too, or go to the doctors.
I feel sorry for him, allergic reactions are nasty and make you feel totally awful :tickedoff:

Well he wore a long sleeve tshirt this morning when he gave one a cuddle and I dont think he's had a reaction, it just seems to happen when they come into contact with his skin so I think we'll be ok :)

I've heard that people can sometimes build up a tolerance, he used to have bad hayfever when he was younger so I was worried that it would start playing up with having hay in the cage but he's been fine as long as he doesnt come into contact with it.

I think if it does flare up anti histamines would do the trick so we'll just keep something in the house just incase :)

So panic over hopefully!
 
This happened to me once, i'm not risking it again though, everytijme i held a guinea pig on bare skin it would go red raw and itch like hell, and I would sneeze, I haven't sneeked since but long sleeves do the trick O0
 
I love pets but i suffer bad asthma plus all the usual symtoms when around cats and dogs.

When I got married my hubby had a cat but over the 10 yrs we had him I become a little less allergic to him but all other cats made me ill.....weird I know!

Now I have Ginger and Sasha my two lovely piggies they do have to live outdoors but so far I don't seem to be too allergic to them even when I do finally cornered them for cuddles.

That's good news, it's a shame Steven is allergic to them in the first place but at least you can still keep them. :)
