HELP!

hi everyone
i got 2 female piggies about 2 months ago. one of them was already pregnant! she gave birth to 2 beautiful babies. 1 is a boy the other is a girl. we need to separate the boy this week otherwise he will mate. i've heard that piggies have to be at least 6 months old to be neutered. is this true, and if so will he be able to go back with the others after he's had it done, or will he not recognise them and fight?

plus, when my piggie had babies we had to separate her from the other one. the other one is now on her own. we've started to introduce her back again, as advised by the vet but they fight :'( :'( (biting etc.). Would i be able to introduce a new friend for her, or would she fight with it as well? please help!! :( :( :( :(
 
the boy can be put back in with the girls after he has been neutered and the waiting period is up, I dont think there should be any problems with that :)

I dont know much about the sows fighting...as mine have never had this problem, but I guess you follow the same steps as introducing two boars...

Theres no telling whether she would fight with a new friend...i think its more to do with the individual piggy. You could try introducng her to different pigs or diff ages and take it from there.

I know that after guineas have their babies, they should be left alone with them...so maybe this is why they were fighting, the mum still wants to be alone with her bubs...I would wait until the boar has been moved and everythings back to 'normal' then start from scratch trying to introduce the sow back with the mum and her baby. :)

Also, make sure you have checked the sex of the original piggies....not saying you are silly, but i got it very wrong not so long ago! ::) ;D
 
Agree with everything Perfectpiggies has said. Boars can be neutered as young as four months of age, but it does depend on their condition. He will be able to go back with the others (after waiting three weeks after the operation), however, you will have to introduce them to his territory. With the sow not accepting the other sow again, I would wait until the have had the babies and the babies have been weaned and then try and introduce them again. You will have to follow the steps of introductions e.g. introduce on neutral territory, make sure the cage you put them in together has neither of their scents on. Visit that bridge when the babies have been raised. Hope this has helped O0

ne got done.
please correct me if this is wrong cos i am at the end of my tether

I think neutering depends on your vet, I've never heard of them waiting until he's fully grown though. Some vets say 5 months, some say over 500g in weight. Maybe your vet wasn't comfortable doing the operation on a smaller cavy?

Yes.. Please check. My 2 original 'female piggies' turned out to be boys. They were even checked by the vet who said that they were girls. Do your own research! Better to be safe than sorry! :)

A boar can be neutered as young as four months, however, it does depend on their condition e.g. weight, size, overall condition. Even though a boar can be neutered as young as four months many vets prefer to wait until at least six months. As you know the operation has risks so it is better to neuter any animal when it is young. The older the animal the more risks is involved. I have known boars to keep growing up to around eighteen months, waiting this long is O.K., however, by this time the boar could be neutered and settled with a sow or two. To me it sounds like either your vet is not very experienced or it is their personal preference. O0

i took them too the vets when we first found out she was pregnant, and the vet said they were definitely both girls! :o :o

I would find another vet most will say six months old before they will neuter a piggie. Rimmer was done at just under four months old but he was very big for his age in every way ;)
